This position is responsible for the development and maintenance of electric distribution equipment specifications and construction standards (both overhead and underground), ensuring compliance with the National Electric Safety Code (NESC). The role supports field personnel with the proper application of materials and equipment, investigates equipment failures, collaborates with Supply Chain to ensure material availability and substitutions, and supports emergency operations and other tasks as directed.
Hybrid – Providence, RI
Develop and maintain specifications for electric distribution equipment and construction standards.
Ensure compliance with the NESC and other applicable industry codes and standards.
Provide engineering support to operations teams, including System Restoration, Dispatch, Substation Maintenance, Distribution Asset Management, and Supply Chain.
Assist field personnel with material and equipment usage and application.
Investigate failed equipment and coordinate with manufacturers to resolve issues and assess new materials.
Support the development and implementation of new equipment specifications and the application of standards and policies.
Direct and coordinate activities of CAD/Graphics Specialists and/or Project Coordinators.
Represent the company in industry organizations (e.g., EPRI, NEETRAC, MEDE, SEE).
Assist with complex projects and collaborate with other engineers as needed.
Promote a safe work environment and support company safety initiatives.
Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Required:
Bachelor's degree in an applicable engineering discipline.
Preferred:
Experience with electric utility, transmission, or distribution line design.
Working knowledge of industry codes and regulatory standards, including NERC, FERC, PJM, IEEE.
Familiarity with electric distribution systems, materials, equipment, and standards.
Proficiency or the ability to learn Microsoft Office, ORACLE Applications, PoleForeman, Cascade, and Powerbase.
Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
Ability to interpret and apply engineering codes and standards.
Experience working with suppliers and equipment manufacturers is a plus.
Work Environment: Hybrid role with a mix of office and field work.
Travel: Required throughout the KU/LG&E service area; occasional overnight travel.
Physical Requirements: Primarily desk work with some walking and standing; field work may involve climbing, navigating uneven terrain, and light lifting.
