Substation Controls Technician / SCADA Engineer

Location: Lexington or Louisville, KY (Hybrid – In office Tues-Thurs; remote Mon/Fri)


Position Summary:
We are seeking a Substation Controls Technician or Engineer to support the setup and programming of smart grid devices for electric utility substations and distribution systems. This role is responsible for ensuring proper configuration, communication, and functionality of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), relays, and other field devices in alignment with utility standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop settings and configurations for substation projects using existing RTU and communication standards.

  • Create and review point assignment sheets in collaboration with substation design engineers.

  • Apply communication standards provided by network engineers to support substation integration.

  • Troubleshoot communication and data issues in coordination with system operators and relay test personnel.

  • Program and remotely configure field devices such as reclosers and capacitor banks for new installations, equipment replacements, and protection setting updates.

  • Support system programming for the integration of new substation equipment and field devices.


Callouts:

  • Must be local to Lexington or Louisville, KY or willing to work a hybrid schedule: in-office Tuesday through Thursday, with remote work on Monday and Friday.

  • Initial training period may require full in-office attendance for the first few weeks.


Basic Requirements:

  • Strong work ethic and reliable attendance record.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer systems and software.

  • 2–5 years of relevant work experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field preferred. Equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology.

  • 2–5 years of utility or power systems experience.

  • Experience with programming SEL relays, RTUs, gateways, or similar smart grid devices.

  • Knowledge of distribution or transmission protection and controls, and/or relay testing.
