We are seeking an experienced Senior Mainframe Software Engineer to join an agile software engineering team supporting business-critical enterprise applications. This role is ideal for a seasoned mainframe professional with strong COBOL, JCL, z/OS, and batch-processing experience, particularly within financial, accounting, healthcare, claims, billing, or other highly controlled environments.

The Senior Mainframe Software Engineer will design, develop, enhance, and support high-volume, file-based applications and financial processing solutions. You will be involved throughout the full software development lifecycle—from requirements and technical design through development, testing, implementation, and production support.

What You’ll Do

• Design, develop, test, implement, and maintain enterprise mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, z/OS tools, batch-processing technologies, and flat-file interfaces.

• Create technical designs and engineering specifications for mainframe applications, batch programs, interfaces, data transformations, and supporting components.

• Maintain and enhance financial-processing rules, including source-data standardization, financial attribute and General Ledger (GL) mapping, validation, and transaction transformation.

• Develop and support inbound and outbound file processing, interface extracts, passback files, translation and validation tables, control totals, journal-entry outputs, and detail and summary files.

• Troubleshoot production issues including abends, failed batch jobs, file-processing errors, mapping defects, data discrepancies, balancing failures, and reconciliation issues.

• Perform safe restart and recovery activities while clearly communicating production impacts and resolution status.

• Maintain strong financial and data controls through duplicate-file checks, record balancing, reconciliation, traceability, and audit-support documentation.

• Partner with Finance, Accounting, Business Systems Analysts, Operations, Architecture, Data, Integration, QA, and Product teams to deliver new interfaces, financial feeds, platform enhancements, and business onboarding.

• Develop unit and integration tests, participate in code reviews, and follow established source-control, deployment, testing, and change-management practices.

• Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, estimation, story development, acceptance criteria, and status reporting.

• Evaluate technical alternatives, identify operational risks and trade-offs, document support procedures, and help ensure application reliability and performance.

• Serve as a senior technical resource and mentor less-experienced engineers.

• Participate in scheduled production support, after-hours implementations, and critical incident coverage when necessary.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience designing, developing, deploying, and supporting business-critical applications.

• Significant hands-on experience with z/OS mainframe application development and production batch operations.

• Advanced experience developing and maintaining COBOL and JCL.

• Strong experience with job streams, file-based processing, dependencies, abend diagnosis, restart/recovery procedures, and production implementations.

• Experience supporting large-scale batch applications involving financial, accounting, claims, billing, payment, or similarly controlled enterprise data.

• Strong understanding of mainframe datasets, flat-file layouts, record processing, control files, batch scheduling, operational monitoring, and failure recovery.

• Working knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts.

• Experience analyzing complex data flows involving source extracts, translation processes, control totals, detail/summary outputs, data warehouse feeds, and General Ledger interfaces.

• Solid understanding of software engineering best practices across the full SDLC, including coding standards, testing, code reviews, source control, deployment, operations, and documentation.

• Experience working within an Agile/Scrum environment and with tools such as Jira, RTC, or Digital.ai Agility.

• Strong troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, problem-solving, and production-support skills.

• Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• Ability to mentor junior and intermediate engineers and serve as a senior technical resource.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.

• 7+ years of technology and application-development experience, particularly within healthcare, financial services, or another highly regulated environment.

• Experience supporting General Ledger, accounting, reconciliation, journal-entry, claims, billing, payment, or financial-reporting applications.

• Experience with mainframe-based financial translation or interface applications.

• Knowledge of Oracle or PeopleSoft data structures and query tools.

• Experience with Informatica, enterprise data integration, managed file transfers, data warehouses, and enterprise job scheduling.

• Experience with translation tables, validation rules, financial mappings, balancing controls, duplicate-file checks, reconciliation, and audit requirements.

• Knowledge of healthcare payer data and financial feeds.

• Exposure to Java, Python, JavaScript, C/C++, or other programming languages supporting broader engineering or modernization initiatives.

Additional Requirements

• Travel: 0–25%.

• Ability to support planned implementations, batch-processing windows, and critical production incidents outside normal business hours when necessary.

• Ability to comply with applicable privacy, information security, confidentiality, HIPAA, legal, regulatory, and corporate training requirements.
