PCB Design Engineer (Des Moines, IA)

 

Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented PCB Design Engineer to join a growing, mission-driven organization focused on developing innovative safety and monitoring technologies. This role is responsible for the design, layout, and optimization of printed circuit boards that power next-generation electronic products.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop high-quality PCB layouts for embedded electronic systems, including multilayer boards
  • Create and maintain schematics, PCB layouts, and manufacturing outputs (Gerber files, BOMs, fabrication drawings)
  • Perform component placement, routing, and signal integrity optimization for analog and digital circuits
  • Ensure designs meet performance, manufacturability (DFM), and reliability standards
  • Collaborate with electrical, firmware, and mechanical engineering teams to integrate complete system designs
  • Support prototyping, testing, and validation of PCB assemblies
  • Troubleshoot design issues and perform root cause analysis on hardware failures
  • Work with manufacturers and suppliers to support PCB fabrication and assembly processes
  • Identify and implement design improvements, including solutions for component obsolescence
  • Maintain documentation for designs, revisions, and engineering changes

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • 3–5+ years of experience in PCB design and layout for electronic products
  • Strong experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (Altium preferred)
  • Proficiency in multilayer PCB design, including high-speed digital and analog circuits
  • Experience generating manufacturing files (Gerber, drill files, BOMs)
  • Knowledge of design for manufacturing (DFM) and assembly processes (SMT, THT)
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, USB, Bluetooth)
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

 

Preferred:

  • Experience with embedded systems or IoT devices
  • Understanding of signal integrity, EMI/EMC considerations, and power distribution
  • Experience collaborating with contract manufacturers and PCB fabricators
  • Familiarity with PLM systems (e.g., Arena)
