Underwriting Manager Job Overview:
Our client is seeking an experienced Underwriting Manager to lead and develop a team of underwriters while ensuring high-quality risk assessment, operational efficiency, and exceptional customer service. This role is responsible for overseeing underwriting performance, managing productivity and compliance standards, and supporting strategic initiatives across the organization. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership capabilities, deep life insurance underwriting expertise, and the ability to effectively manage complex risk decisions in a fast-paced environment.

What you will be doing as an Underwriting Manager …
Underwriting Leadership & Risk Management
- Manage and mentor a team of underwriters to ensure accurate risk assessment, strong service levels, and productivity standards.
- Review second approval cases up to $2 million while maintaining a high level of accuracy and compliance.
- Monitor underwriting quality, risk assessment practices, and reinsurance treaty compliance.
- Handle escalated underwriting and risk assessment calls from agents and partners.
- Utilize medical director guidance on complex medical cases and collaborate with reinsurers on risk retention exceptions.
- Support the development and implementation of underwriting guidelines and operational procedures.
Team Development & Performance Management
- Conduct workload assessments to ensure service and productivity goals are achieved.
- Provide coaching, training, and developmental opportunities for team members.
- Manage employee performance including hiring, onboarding, evaluations, recognition, and disciplinary actions.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and encourage team engagement in process enhancements.
Operational & Financial Oversight
- Develop, maintain, and report on individual and team productivity metrics.
- Ensure service standards and turnaround expectations are consistently met.
- Manage departmental expenses within budget guidelines and provide analysis to support budgeting activities.
- Monitor vendor relationships and ensure invoices and operational processes are managed efficiently.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Strategic Support
- Build strong relationships with agents, IMOs, reinsurers, and internal departments.
- Lead or coordinate projects and ensure timely completion within scope and budget.
- Participate in product development and product management initiatives.
- Provide case clinics, underwriting education, and technical guidance to internal teams.
- Effectively manage change initiatives, resolve conflicts, and support organizational goals.
Skills you ideally bring to the table as an Underwriting Manager …
- Associate degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- 10+ years of life insurance underwriting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- FALU designation required.
- Completion of LOMA certifications including ACS and FLMI required.
- Strong understanding of life insurance products, underwriting regulations, and compliance standards.
- In-depth medical underwriting knowledge and understanding of financial insurance concepts and estate planning.
- Experience with underwriting guidelines, reinsurance relationships, and underwriting engine systems.
- Strong leadership, communication, and employee development skills.
- Ability to analyze data, manage budgets, and drive operational improvements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, LifePro, illustration software, and related underwriting systems.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
