Job Description
Overview
We're looking for a Senior Data Scientist with expertise in both machine learning and electric power systems. You'll build predictive models and analytics solutions that influence how we plan and operate the power grid, working with complex datasets from DER integration, grid simulations, and large-scale operational sources. Beyond analysis, you'll lead data science strategy, mentor teammates, and own the full model lifecycle from prototype to production.
Key Responsibilities
- Model the impact of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) on grid operations, control, and planning using tools such as PSS/E, Matpower, Cyme, GridCal, GridLAB-D, pypower, PSAT, or OpenDDS.
- Design and develop predictive and machine learning models to forecast outcomes and support critical business decisions.
- Build and maintain complex datasets from large, unstructured data sources; oversee automated analytics pipelines in Python.
- Partner with Data Engineers on dataset identification, pipeline review, and database design for unstructured data.
- Work within Databricks and big data platforms to process and analyze data at scale.
- Lead proof-of-concept prototypes, define ML testing strategies, and manage model deployment and monitoring in production.
- Act as data science lead on agile teams; shape overall data science strategy and mentor team members.
- Communicate findings and model outcomes to technical and non-technical stakeholders across the business.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or Computer Science.
- 5+ years in data science or applied analytics.
- Advanced Python skills for modeling, data processing, and automation.
- Hands-on ML experience: model building, validation, and production deployment.
- Strong statistics foundation and experience managing very large datasets.
Preferred
- Experience with power systems tools: PSS/E, Matpower, Cyme, GridCal, GridLAB-D, pypower, PSAT, or OpenDDS.
- Familiarity with DER technologies and grid operations.
- Experience with Databricks, Apache Spark, or equivalent big data platforms.
- Background in energy, utilities, or smart grid environments.
