Job Title: Distribution Protection Engineer – Storm Protection Plan (SPP)
Location: Tampa, FL (Onsite 5 Days per Week)
Duration: 6 Month Contract
Compensation: $65-70/Hr W2
Overview
We are seeking a Distribution Protection Engineer to support large-scale Storm Protection Plan (SPP) initiatives focused on feeder hardening, undergrounding, protection coordination, and distribution reliability improvements. This role will support critical grid modernization and storm resiliency programs within a fast-paced utility engineering environment.
The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience with distribution engineering, feeder design, fuse coordination, and utility protection systems. Candidates should be comfortable working cross-functionally with internal engineering teams, contractors, operations, and system planning groups to support safe and reliable power delivery initiatives.
This is a highly visible engineering role supporting infrastructure programs that directly impact grid reliability, outage reduction, and system resiliency.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform circuit-level fuse coordination and protection analysis across SPP distribution programs
- Support overhead feeder design, feeder hardening, undergrounding, and distribution wood pole replacement initiatives
- Review coordination of impacted circuits and adjacent systems to ensure proper protection settings and reliability
- Analyze and support Fault Location Isolation Service Restoration (FLISR) activities and device settings
- Evaluate load transfer and phase change requests for operational feasibility
- Coordinate with System Planning, ADMS, and operations teams to support execution activities
- Review contractor designs and ensure alignment with NESC and utility engineering standards
- Participate in weekly engineering and contractor design meetings
- Support development of engineering standards, best practices, and technical documentation
- Assist with troubleshooting distribution power system issues and implementing corrective actions
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited university
- 3+ years of utility engineering or distribution engineering experience
- Experience with overhead feeder design and distribution engineering
- Strong understanding of fuse coordination and circuit protection principles
- Experience with GIS systems and WorkPro or similar utility work management tools
- Ability to read and interpret electrical one-lines, schematics, and distribution maps
- Experience working within utility engineering or electric distribution environments
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, and project coordination skills
- Florida Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) License
- Experience with FLISR analysis and distribution automation
- Knowledge of NESC standards and utility construction practices
- Experience supporting storm hardening or grid modernization initiatives
- Experience coordinating contractors and reviewing engineering deliverables
- Familiarity with ADMS and outage management systems
