Job Description

NOW HIRING: Designer IV – Civil/Structural (Transmission Substation) Direct Hire | Full-Time Comprehensive benefits effective Day 1

RCS Staffing is placing a Designer IV – Civil/Structural with a leading transmission and substation engineering firm. This is the fourth level of the Designer classification — a direct-hire opportunity for a highly experienced civil/structural designer ready to serve as a technical authority within the discipline. With significant utility industry experience and advanced AutoCAD skills, you will lead complex design work, mentor junior designers and drafters, and deliver high-quality structural drawings and fabrication packages for transmission substation projects nationwide.

OVERVIEW OF YOUR ROLE As a Designer IV – Civil/Structural, you will provide advanced technical expertise and design leadership to a transmission substation engineering and design team. Operating with minimal direct supervision, you will lead discipline design work on complex projects, produce thorough and accurate civil/structural drawings and documentation, and serve as a technical resource and mentor for less-experienced designers and drafters. This role combines direct billable project work with project leadership, continuous improvement of discipline practices, and contributions to the firm's design quality and efficiency.

YOU WILL

  • Provide advanced technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of complex civil/structural design problems — operating with minimal direct supervision.
  • Design and detail steel and rebar for substation structural applications; create steel fabrication drawings to construction-ready standards.
  • Design and detail foundations and drilled piers for substation equipment support structures.
  • Use AutoCAD and/or MicroStation to produce thorough, accurate technical drawings, documentation, calculations, and sketches across assigned project scopes.
  • Provide effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities on assigned projects.
  • Lead and mentor junior designers and drafters; provide technical direction and leadership to other team members.
  • Drive continuous improvement of technical and professional knowledge, skills, and performance within the civil/structural discipline.
  • Maintain accurate records and files; communicate progress and solutions clearly to project teams and clients.
  • Support the company's goals and represent the firm positively and professionally in all client and team interactions.
  • Manage multiple tasks simultaneously; apply project management principles to coordinate work efficiently and meet project schedules.

YOU ARE THE IDEAL CANDIDATE IF YOU HAVE

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent) with 8+ years of experience — OR an Associate's degree in Engineering Technology with 10+ years of experience — OR 15+ years of equivalent experience without a degree.
  • Direct experience in the electric utility industry — required at this level.
  • Strong AutoCAD proficiency with demonstrated ability to design and detail steel, rebar, and foundations for structural applications; MicroStation skills are a plus.
  • Hands-on experience creating steel fabrication drawings and designing and detailing foundations and drilled piers.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision; self-motivated with strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Team-oriented and customer-focused, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and provide leadership and direction to other team members.

IT'S A BONUS IF YOU HAVE

  • Experience creating 3D models for structural design; proficiency in Autodesk Inventor is a strong plus.
  • Proficiency in project management principles — experience planning, estimating, and managing civil/structural design scopes and schedules.
  • Experience coordinating civil/structural design with other disciplines (electrical, P&C, physical) on substation or power delivery projects.
  • Experience supporting proposal development or cost estimating for civil/structural design scopes.
