Job Description

RCS Staffing is placing a Mechanical Designer with our Client in Wilmington, NC. This is a contract, full-time, on-site opportunity for an early-career designer ready to contribute to a first-of-a-kind uranium enrichment technology program. You will work alongside experienced engineers and senior designers, translating engineering requirements into 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings, and assemblies for highly specialized nuclear process equipment. This is a rare chance to grow your career on a nationally significant, technically challenging program from the ground up.

OVERVIEW OF YOUR ROLE

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager and working closely with Senior Designers and Engineers, you will support the detailed mechanical design of separator/cascade equipment and UF₆ gas handling systems. You'll develop your CAD skills and design fundamentals in a hands-on, collaborative environment — learning directly from some of the most experienced designers in the nuclear industry while contributing real deliverables to an active program. This role operates in a classified, NRC-regulated environment and requires an active Q-Clearance.

YOU WILL

  • Develop mechanical designs from engineering concepts and design inputs under the guidance of senior designers and engineers.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models and assemblies using parametric modeling techniques.
  • Produce manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, bills of material, and supporting design documentation.
  • Apply ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing principles on drawings and design packages.
  • Work with engineers, machinists, fabricators, and assembly/test personnel to resolve design and fabrication questions.
  • Support design reviews — checking models and drawings for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with design standards.
  • Assist with configuration control, design release, and CAD standards practices.
  • Support prototype assembly, installation, and testing activities; incorporate lessons learned into design updates.
  • Grow your skills under mentorship from senior designers in a technically rigorous, mission-critical environment.

YOU ARE THE IDEAL CANDIDATE IF YOU HAVE

  • 1–5 years of mechanical design experience, with proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and assembly creation.
  • Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Experience producing manufacturing drawings and bills of material.
  • Basic understanding of machining, fabrication, and manufacturing processes.
  • A collaborative, detail-oriented approach — you ask good questions, check your work, and take quality seriously.
  • An active NRC Q-Clearance (required — candidates must hold an active clearance at time of offer).

IT'S A BONUS IF YOU HAVE

  • Experience with top-down or parametric CAD modeling methods.
  • Exposure to process equipment, gas handling systems, or precision mechanical hardware.
  • Experience in nuclear, classified, defense, or similarly regulated environments.
  • Experience supporting prototype fabrication, assembly, or testing activities.
  • Coursework or certification in tolerance analysis or GD&T.

ABOUT OUR CLIENT

Our client is a nuclear technology company developing and commercializing a first-of-a-kind laser-based uranium enrichment process at their Wilmington, NC facility. The program represents a significant advancement in domestic nuclear fuel production technology, supporting U.S. energy security and the next generation of clean energy supply. Designers and engineers on this program work on highly specialized, mission-critical equipment in a classified, NRC-regulated environment — the kind of technically challenging, meaningful work that defines a career.
