Job Description

RCS Staffing has an immediate need for a Principal Systems Engineer – Power Electronics in Bethel, Connecticut. This is a full-time, direct-hire assignment with our client. Our client offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage, HSA contributions, life and disability insurance, a 401(k) savings plan, competitive vacation, paid parental leave, and professional development programs.

Overview of YOUR Role as a Principal Systems Engineer

In this role, you will serve as the senior technical authority for the design and development of complex naval power electronics systems. You will translate customer specifications into cost-effective architectures, lead multi-disciplinary engineering teams, and drive development programs from requirements definition through verification and validation. This is a high-visibility leadership position working on power electronics, drives, and uninterruptible power supply systems for the U.S. Navy and allied navies worldwide.

As a Principal Systems Engineer, YOU Will:

  • Review customer specifications and requirements to develop cost-effective designs, with cost treated as a key design variable alongside performance and reliability.
  • Define and drive the architecture of complex systems and subsystems in power electronics, motor drives, and uninterruptible power supplies for naval and defense applications.
  • Lead the creation of system-level technical documentation and budget estimates for proposals; identify and execute strategies to retire key development risks early in the program lifecycle.
  • Verify product and subsystem performance through simulation, analysis, and laboratory testing; ensure validation approaches are complete and appropriate for each program’s needs.
  • Generate and manage a requirements traceability matrix (RTM), maintaining end-to-end traceability from customer and regulatory requirements through component and subsystem specifications.
  • Provide technical leadership on large or multi-disciplinary projects: direct technical execution, identify and delegate tasks within the engineering team, and drive activities to completion on schedule and within budget.
  • Mentor engineers and facilitate technical reviews — architecture, requirements, design, and verification — to ensure rigor and consistency across the program.

YOU Are the Ideal Principal Systems Engineer Candidate If You Have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent technical field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • 10+ years of detailed design experience in power electronics applications, including power conversion, motor drives, or UPS systems.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB and Simulink for simulation of electrical systems to the component level.
  • Experience with Navy or other defense applications and the defense acquisition environment.
  • S. citizenship (required); the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.

It’s a BONUS If You Have:

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related power-focused discipline.
  • Model-based design experience for power electronic systems.
  • Real-time modeling experience for power electronic systems.
  • An active DoD security clearance.
