ProspectBlue is partnering with a leading employee benefits organization in its search for multiple Stop Loss Underwriters at varying levels of experience. There are several openings available, ranging from Associate to Senior and Lead-level positions, providing opportunities for insurance professionals at different stages of their underwriting careers. This role offers a hybrid schedule but must be commutable to their offices in Minneapolis, MN.
These roles are responsible for evaluating employer group medical stop loss submissions and supporting underwriting decisions for both new business and renewal opportunities. The ideal candidate will bring strong analytical and problem-solving skills, sound underwriting judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively communicate recommendations to internal teams, brokers, field representatives, and clients. The level, responsibilities, and approval authority will be determined based on the candidates experience and qualifications.
Key Responsibilities:
Evaluate employer group medical stop loss submissions for new business and renewals.
Analyze group demographics, claims experience, large claimant activity, participation, plan design, contract terms, funding arrangements, and other risk factors.
Assess overall risk, pricing, profitability, and potential exposure when developing underwriting recommendations.
Ensure proposed stop loss coverage aligns with established underwriting guidelines, pricing objectives, and administrative requirements.
Review and interpret claims data and other financial information to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
Develop appropriate underwriting recommendations and communicate decisions clearly and effectively.
Partner with brokers, field personnel, internal business partners, and clients to gather information and resolve questions throughout the underwriting process.
Balance competitive market considerations with sound risk management and profitability objectives.
Maintain accurate and thorough underwriting documentation.
Support the development and maintenance of a profitable stop loss book of business.
Provide guidance, training, and support to less experienced underwriters as appropriate based on level and experience.
Contribute to process improvements and other initiatives designed to enhance underwriting effectiveness and service.
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience preferred.
Experience in group insurance underwriting, stop loss underwriting, supplemental health, voluntary benefits, or a related insurance discipline.
Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to evaluate complex information and make sound business decisions.
Strong understanding of risk assessment, pricing considerations, claims experience, and profitability.
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other relevant underwriting or analytical systems.

Associate Stop Loss Underwriter
Entry-level underwriting position responsible for evaluating basic group insurance applications under direct supervision.
Develops underwriting knowledge and applies established guidelines to routine cases.
Approval authority for groups up to approximately 1,000 lives.
Typically requires 02 years of relevant underwriting experience.
Senior Stop Loss Underwriter
Independently evaluates more complex group insurance applications and develops underwriting recommendations.
Exercises greater judgment and authority in assessing risk, pricing, and contract considerations.
Approval authority for groups up to approximately 5,000 lives.
Typically requires 34 years of group underwriting, voluntary benefits, stop loss, or related insurance experience.
May provide training, coaching, and guidance to Associate Underwriters.
Lead Stop Loss Underwriter
Independently handles the most complex and high-value underwriting opportunities.
Provides broader underwriting guidance and serves as a resource for the team on complex risk and pricing decisions.
Approval authority for groups up to approximately 10,000 lives.
Typically requires 58 years of underwriting experience, with supplemental health or stop loss experience preferred.
May provide work direction, training, mentoring, and quality or performance feedback to other underwriters.
Supports consistency in underwriting practices and contributes to broader business and process initiatives.
