ProspectBlue is partnered with a local real estate development company looking to add a Portfolio Accountant to their team in Richmond, Virginia.

Location: Richmond, Virginia (Remote candidates within Virginia will be considered)

Reports To: Chief Financial Officer

Job Summary

The Portfolio Accountant will collaborate closely with the CFO to oversee financial reporting and tax compliance for a real estate investment venture exceeding $80 million. This role involves handling operational accounting functions, including general ledger management, financial statements, and audits. Additionally, the Portfolio Accountant will track capital improvements, manage capital calls, and prepare cash flow forecasts.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, entrepreneurial, and highly motivated, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to multitask effectively across multiple projects. Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as solid interpersonal abilities, are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily accounting and treasury functions for a portfolio of real estate assets.
  • Prepare and oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including consolidated financial statements, footnotes, and supporting schedules.
  • Ensure internal controls are maintained and effectively implemented.
  • Assist in developing and managing accounting policies and procedures, including invoice processing, cash disbursements, and fee calculations.
  • Prepare capital call notices and track capital expenditure sources and uses for all properties.
  • Conduct analytical reviews of operating results to ensure accurate financial reporting and general ledger administration.
  • Ensure compliance with all filing deadlines and reporting requirements.
  • Own and manage the monthly financial reporting package to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Monitor cash flow and manage liquidity needs across all properties.
  • Oversee closing transactions, reconciliations, and lender compliance policies.
  • Direct financial audits and coordinate the preparation of annual tax filings.
  • Serve as the point of contact for year-end audits, tax returns, and investor reporting.
  • Provide financial reports to prospective lenders and investors as needed.
  • Prepare and track investor capital contributions, distributions, and related accounting.
  • Develop and monitor annual operating and capital budgets for investment properties.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • CPA certification preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in accounting from an accredited institution.
  • Experience with real estate accounting software (Rent Manager preferred).
  • 2–5 years of experience in commercial real estate finance, accounting, budget management, cash management, credit, and tax.
  • Strong knowledge of real estate accounting principles and financial analysis.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to handle advanced accounting tasks independently.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, work efficiently under pressure, and prioritize workloads effectively.
