Job Title: Job Cost Accountant
Position Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Job Cost Accountant to join our team. This role is ideal for a candidate with a background in TxDOT project accounting and a strong understanding of Work in Progress (WIP) reporting. The ideal candidate will be responsible for tracking, analyzing, and reporting job costs related to road construction and infrastructure projects, ensuring accuracy, profitability, and compliance with both internal controls and TxDOT standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Job Costing & Analysis:
- Maintain detailed job cost records for active and completed projects, especially those governed by TxDOT standards.
- Track actual vs. budgeted costs and provide variance analysis.
- Allocate labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractor costs accurately to appropriate projects.
- WIP Reporting:
- Prepare and maintain monthly Work in Progress (WIP) reports.
- Collaborate with project managers and leadership to update project status, percentage of completion, and revenue recognition based on project progress.
- Ensure timely and accurate posting of revenue and cost entries to align with GAAP and company policies.
- Compliance & Documentation:
- Ensure all cost-related documentation complies with TxDOT audit standards and contract terms.
- Assist in audits by providing organized, accessible cost tracking and backup documentation.
- Project Coordination:
- Support Project Managers in understanding cost performance and financial health of each project.
- Participate in project reviews and financial forecasting meetings.
- Recommend process improvements for more efficient job cost tracking and reporting.
- General Accounting Support:
- Support month-end and year-end close processes as they relate to job cost entries.
- Assist with reconciling job cost subledger to the general ledger.
Qualifications:
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. - Experience:
- 3+ years of accounting experience in the construction industry.
- Strong preference for candidates with direct experience working on TxDOT projects.
- Proven experience in WIP reporting, percent-complete accounting, and job cost systems.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in construction accounting software (e.g., Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300 CRE, or similar).
- Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, data validation).
- Familiarity with AASHTO or TxDOT cost coding structures is a plus.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of TxDOT billing procedures, cost accounting methods, and audit standards.
- Experience supporting financial aspects of infrastructure and heavy civil construction projects.
