Job Description

Job Title: Level 1 Data Center Cable Technician

Job Summary:
The Level 1 Data Center Cable Technician is responsible for supporting structured cabling installations within the data center environment. This entry-level role focuses on cable routing, termination, labeling, testing, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable connectivity and optimal network performance. The technician will work under the guidance of senior technicians and site supervisors while adhering to safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install, route, and secure copper (Cat5e/6/6a) and fiber optic cables within ladder racks, trays, conduits, and cabinets.
  • Terminate copper cabling to patch panels, jacks, and network equipment following industry standards (TIA/EIA).
  • Assist with fiber optic terminations, polishing, and splicing (under supervision).
  • Label cables, patch panels, and racks in accordance with site documentation standards.
  • Perform basic cable testing and certification using tools such as Fluke testers, OTDR, and continuity testers.
  • Support moves, adds, and changes (MACs) of cabling and hardware as requested.
  • Maintain organization of cabling pathways, racks, and patching fields to ensure proper airflow and equipment accessibility.
  • Assist in documenting cable layouts, test results, and inventory.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and data center protocols for secure environments.
  • Provide support to senior technicians and escalate issues when necessary.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (technical training preferred).
  • 0–2 years of experience in cabling, low-voltage wiring, or related technical field.
  • Basic knowledge of structured cabling standards (TIA/EIA, BICSI).
  • Familiarity with copper and fiber cabling, patch panels, and network racks.
  • Ability to use hand tools, cable testers, and labeling equipment.
  • Willingness to learn advanced fiber and copper installation techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in physically demanding environments (ladders, confined spaces).

Preferred Skills:

  • BICSI Installer 1 certification or equivalent training.
  • Previous experience in a data center, telecom, or IT cabling environment.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily data center and network room settings.
  • May require off-hours, weekend, or shift work depending on project schedules.
  • Strict adherence to security and access procedures.
