Position Title: Senior Controls Engineer
Location: Canton, MI
Function: Engineering
Travel: Up to 35% to job sites


Role Overview

The Senior Controls Engineer will work directly with electrical control systems and hardware integration. The role requires strong experience with PLC programming platforms including Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and Automation Direct. This position involves developing automation requirements, designing efficient production control systems, and implementing software and hardware solutions.


Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe work practices and compliance with OSHA and site safety standards.

  • Travel up to 35% for project implementation; extended stays may be required.

  • Work weekends or overtime when necessary to meet deadlines.

  • Design and implement automated systems, including PLC logic and control interfaces.

  • Create and update electrical diagrams, panel drawings, schematics, and HMI pages using AutoCAD.

  • Lead design reviews and develop project documentation and bills of materials.

  • Perform troubleshooting of control systems, including PLC logic, I/O, and communication issues.

  • Analyze plant operations and recommend process improvements.

  • Support equipment upgrades, repairs, and startup activities at customer sites.

  • Maintain control parts inventory and documentation of design and repair activities.

  • Perform other engineering duties as assigned.


Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

  • Comprehensive understanding of electrical systems, codes, and industrial controls.

  • Minimum 5 years of PLC programming experience:

    • Allen-Bradley ControlLogix or CompactLogix preferred.

    • Siemens, Automation Direct, and HMI experience a plus.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for panel layouts and electrical schematics.

  • Working knowledge of sensors, valves, drives, servos, and industrial automation components.

  • Ability to read and interpret schematic drawings, machine prints, and ladder logic.

  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Programming, or a related field (preferred).

  • 3–5 years of experience with high-speed or automated machinery.

  • Proven skills in PLC programming, commissioning, and field support.

  • Familiarity with AC Drives, VFDs, HMIs, Servo, PID, and Motion Control systems strongly preferred.
