Job Description

The Regulatory Food Specialist is responsible for ensuring food compliance related to the development, review, and approval of regulatory information for food product labels to meet government regulations. This role also serves as a subject matter expert for food products, providing insights into the physical, chemical, and sensory properties of food.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to building a robust regulatory compliance program that supports organizational goals.

  • Monitor developments and emerging issues in the food regulatory environment; identify relevant compliance opportunities.

  • Provide regulatory input on cross-functional projects and offer scientific and compliance guidance to internal teams.

  • Support regulatory initiatives and help identify legally compliant opportunities for product claims.

  • Develop ingredient lists and nutrition facts panels in accordance with regulatory requirements.

  • Review product formulas and claims for accuracy and consistency with company policies.

  • Ensure labeling information is accurate, clear, and in compliance with applicable regulations.

  • Evaluate packaging materials for regulatory compliance.

  • Conduct product quality reviews to assess food products against established standards for quality and nutrition.

  • Analyze and report on product characteristics such as nutritional value, appearance, flavor, texture, and color through formal assessments.

  • Monitor and report on consumer complaints, acting as a technical resource when necessary.

  • Track regulatory changes in the food industry and communicate their impact; support appropriate responses to proposed changes.

  • Communicate regulatory information effectively across technical and non-technical teams.

  • Collaborate with teams in quality assurance, compliance, and product development to ensure alignment with food product goals.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, Food Science, Regulatory Science, or a related field.

  • 3–5 years of experience in FDA and USDA food regulations.

  • Solid understanding of food labeling requirements and food safety regulations.

  • Familiarity with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and Good Manufacturing Practices preferred.

  • Knowledge of food processing and production practices.

  • Strong foundation in food science principles.

  • Experience conducting sensory evaluations of food products.

  • Ability to interpret and manage complex regulatory and scientific information.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Comfortable working across various departments and functional levels.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.

  • Experience with Genesis nutrition labeling software preferred.

  • Ability to quickly learn and navigate internal systems and tools.

  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
