Role Overview
The Engineer E5 is a senior engineering professional responsible for delivering innovative engineering, estimating, planning, and quality management services on medium to high complexity projects and operations. This role supports BC Hydro projects by providing safe, high-quality engineering solutions while ensuring work is completed within budget and on schedule. The position requires strong technical expertise in protection and control systems, leadership of multidisciplinary design teams, and the ability to make complex engineering decisions that support transmission system operations and project success within a utility environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop safe engineering solutions through design development, technical analysis, problem resolution, and interpretation of engineering specifications on medium to highly complex assignments
- Lead or coordinate multidisciplinary design teams on major engineering and utility infrastructure projects
- Meet safety, cost, quality, and schedule objectives by proposing changes in plans and estimated costs, recommending contractor payments, preparing progress reports, and coordinating work schedules
- Resolve highly technical and unusual engineering and field issues through independent studies, analysis, and engineering judgment
- Establish engineering design basis, criteria, and technical concepts for major work assignments
- Participate in BC Hydro’s engineering practice by contributing to technical standards, engineering methods, and safe design practices
- Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and support to engineering professionals and project teams
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders to define engineering scope, establish design criteria, and support project execution
- Review, approve, and manage technical documentation and engineering deliverables
- Monitor project progress against engineering standards, objectives, and specifications
- Support engineering governance, quality management, and risk management practices within BC Hydro
Protection & Control Responsibilities
- Support the planning, design, and execution of protection and control projects within an electric utility environment
- Provide technical expertise related to protection relays, automation systems, RTU, SCADA, RAS, and teleprotection devices
- Coordinate engineering activities across multiple disciplines to ensure system integration and operational alignment
- Review engineering deliverables prepared internally and by external consultants
- Ensure designs consider transmission system impacts, operational requirements, and cross-functional project dependencies
- Support field engineering activities, technical troubleshooting, and issue resolution during project execution
- Maintain compliance with NERC requirements and BC Hydro engineering standards
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligible for immediate registration
- Minimum 10 years of experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent
- Minimum 4 years of experience leading or coordinating multidisciplinary design teams
- Strong electric utility engineering background with transmission system and operations perspective
Required Skills
- Strong working knowledge of protection relays, control and automation devices, RTU, SCADA, RAS, and teleprotection systems
- Good working knowledge of NERC requirements
- Strong understanding of transmission system operations and multidisciplinary project interactions
- Good working knowledge of project management principles and project delivery processes
- Ability to manage engineering scope, schedule, quality, and cost objectives effectively
- Strong technical problem-solving and engineering decision-making capability
- Familiarity with CAD systems, drawing standards, and industry design/analysis software
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal, influencing, and conflict resolution skills
Nice to Have
- Good working knowledge of substation design, protection systems, control systems, and telecom systems
- Previous utility or BC Hydro project experience
- Experience supporting multidisciplinary infrastructure projects within transmission environments
Regulatory & Compliance Requirements
- Must hold or be eligible for a Permit to Practice (P2P) through EGBC prior to assignment start
- Work must comply with BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan (Quality Management Pillar)
- Engineer must apply their own or their firm’s Permit to Practice number to sealed work
- All engineering documentation produced will be retained by BC Hydro in accordance with EGBC bylaws
- May be required to use digital signing and sealing technology (e.g., Notarius)
