Max INC rate: $125.78/
Max T4 rate: $103.95/

Role Overview
The Engineer E5 is a senior engineering professional responsible for delivering innovative engineering, estimating, planning, and quality management services on medium to high complexity projects. This role plays a key leadership function in transmission line engineering, supporting projects across the full lifecycle while ensuring delivery is safe, high-quality, on time, and within budget. The position requires strong technical expertise, leadership of multi-disciplinary teams, and the ability to make complex engineering decisions that impact system performance and project success within a utility environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop safe and innovative engineering solutions for complex transmission projects using advanced judgment and technical expertise
• Lead design development, technical analysis, and problem resolution on medium to high complexity assignments
• Interpret engineering standards and specifications to ensure compliant and optimized designs
• Support project delivery by managing scope, cost, schedule, and quality objectives
• Prepare and review estimates, progress reports, and contractor payment recommendations
• Resolve complex and non-standard engineering problems through independent analysis and sound judgment
• Establish design basis, criteria, and technical concepts for major engineering assignments
• Provide leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to engineering teams
• Contribute to the development and improvement of engineering standards and practices
• Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to define scope, design criteria, and technical requirements
• Approve technical documentation and monitor project progress against objectives and standards
• Support BC Hydro’s engineering governance and risk management practices

Transmission Line Leadership Responsibilities
• Lead planning, design, and execution of transmission line projects within an electric utility environment
• Oversee multi-discipline design teams on medium to large-scale infrastructure projects
• Ensure designs consider system impacts, operational requirements, and interdependencies across disciplines
• Review and manage engineering deliverables prepared internally and by external consultants
• Provide technical oversight for transmission systems including substations, protection and control, and telecom interfaces
• Support construction through technical guidance, field reviews, and issue resolution
• Ensure alignment with BC Hydro project delivery processes and engineering design practices

Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline
• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligible for immediate registration
• Minimum 10 years of progressive engineering experience in transmission, substations, or protection and control
• Minimum 4 years of experience leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license

Required Skills
• Strong transmission engineering expertise within a utility environment
• Proven leadership experience on complex, multi-discipline projects
• Deep understanding of transmission system operations and project impacts
• Solid knowledge of project management principles and delivery processes
• Ability to manage engineering scope, schedule, and cost effectively
• Strong technical problem-solving and decision-making capability
• Proficiency with CAD systems, engineering standards, and design/analysis tools
• Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Excellent communication skills, including technical writing and stakeholder coordination

Nice to Have
• Previous Project Manager experience
• Prior BC Hydro or utility experience
• Experience with telecom and/or protection and control systems
• Experience managing Owner’s Engineer reviews of external consultants
• Strong familiarity with BC Hydro engineering standards and project delivery processes
• Field experience on large infrastructure projects (substations, hydroelectric facilities, transmission lines)

Regulatory & Compliance Requirements
• Must hold or be eligible for a Permit to Practice (P2P) through EGBC prior to assignment start
• Work must comply with BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan (Quality Management Pillar)
• Engineer must apply their own or their firm’s Permit to Practice number to sealed work
• All engineering documentation produced will be retained by BC Hydro in accordance with EGBC bylaws
• May be required to use digital signing and sealing technology (e.g., Notarius)
