Job Title: Construction Estimator / Project Coordinator
Location: Surrey, BC (Full-time in office; site visits across BC required)
Work Arrangement: After 6 months, potential for up to 2 days/week remote
Max INC Rate: $85/
Max T4 Rate: $70.25
The Construction Estimator / Project Coordinator performs a broad range of duties related to planning, estimating, scheduling, procurement, and field coordination for construction projects. This role supports generation, substation, and transmission & distribution projects by ensuring accurate cost development, effective scheduling, and strong coordination between office and field operations.
The successful candidate will provide technical support to construction teams, contribute to bid and contract documentation, and ensure project cost and schedule performance is maintained throughout execution.
Prepare detailed cost estimates based on engineering specifications, drawings, and contract conditions.
Conduct quantity takeoffs for materials and components across civil, mechanical, and electrical scopes.
Perform direct cost calculations using established unit costs, productivity rates, or base estimating methods.
Assess risks and incorporate appropriate contingencies into estimates and pricing.
Apply established markups to ensure recovery of overhead expenses.
Maintain up-to-date records of equipment costs, production rates, and material pricing.
Review Cost/Progress Reports and analyze variances between projected and estimated costs.
Evaluate impacts of scheduling changes on overall project costs.
Develop and maintain work schedules for assigned projects.
Coordinate construction activities and support field crews with technical guidance.
Maintain project progress tracking tools (graphs, charts, reports).
Advise management of discrepancies or required changes to work plans.
Participate as an active member of construction project teams.
Compile schedules of pay items for estimates, bid submissions, and subcontract tenders.
Prepare comparative summaries of contractor submissions for bid analysis.
Verify quantity calculations from internal and external sources.
Obtain technical and cost information from suppliers.
Review drawings, specifications, and material lists.
Prepare documentation for procurement of materials, equipment, and subcontracted services.
Assist in preparation of contracts and requisitions for proposals.
Provide technical advice and coordination to field crews and internal/external stakeholders.
May perform site surveys, basic drafting and design work, and operate electrical testing equipment as required.
Prepare non-routine technical reports.
Ensure compliance with applicable standards and codes.
Drive to project sites across BC as required.
Diploma of Technology from an institute of technology OR Degree in a construction-related field (Engineering, Forestry, Architecture, Project Management, Construction Management, Business Administration, Quantity Surveying) OR related trades qualification (Electrician, Winder, Power Line Technician, General Trades 1, Millwright).
Minimum five (5) years of experience in construction and/or project management (field or office-based).
Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
Must have own vehicle to complete site visits.
Excellent knowledge of Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical discipline, with working knowledge of at least one additional discipline.
Strong understanding of construction practices for generation, substations, and transmission & distribution facilities.
Excellent knowledge of applicable standards and codes.
Strong construction estimating and scheduling skills.
Working knowledge of project management principles.
Good knowledge of accounting processes and ability to explain financial aspects to technical staff.
Excellent analytical skills with ability to assess job cost and schedule reports and recommend corrective action.
Proficiency in computer applications related to design, estimating, scheduling, costing, and project management systems.
Basic drafting and design skills.
Strong interpersonal, written communication, and negotiation skills.
Ability to provide technical direction and coordinate construction trades.
Ability to drive for site visits across British Columbia.
Experience supporting construction projects within a utility or similar infrastructure environment.
