Construction Technologist

Location: Prince George, BC
Work Arrangement: Primarily site-based with site visits throughout the Northern Interior, as required

Contract Duration: February 9, 2026 – January 29, 2027
Maximum Rates:

  • INC: up to $85/hour

  • T4: up to $70.25/hour


Role Overview

The Construction Technologist supports construction projects through planning, estimating, scheduling, and field coordination activities. This role works closely with project teams, field crews, and suppliers to ensure construction activities are executed efficiently, safely, and in alignment with project plans, schedules, and budgets.


Key Responsibilities

Estimating & Cost Control

  • Prepare detailed construction cost estimates based on engineering specifications and contract conditions

  • Perform quantity takeoffs and develop material, labour, and equipment cost calculations

  • Assess construction risks and incorporate appropriate allowances into estimates and pricing

  • Apply established markups to direct costs to ensure recovery of overhead expenses

  • Maintain up-to-date records of equipment costs, production rates, and material pricing

Scheduling & Planning

  • Develop and maintain construction work schedules for assigned projects

  • Revise estimates and schedules to reflect scope changes or evolving project requirements

  • Review cost and progress reports to compare estimated vs. projected costs

  • Evaluate the impact of schedule changes on overall project costs

Field Coordination & Technical Support

  • Provide technical guidance and coordination to construction field crews

  • Participate as a member of multi-disciplinary construction project teams

  • Identify discrepancies between planned and actual work and advise project leadership accordingly

  • Maintain project progress data, including charts, graphs, and reporting tools

Procurement & Contract Support

  • Compile schedules of pay items for estimates, bid submissions, and subcontract tender documents

  • Prepare comparative summaries of contractor submissions for bid evaluation

  • Verify quantity calculations prepared by others for accuracy and completeness

  • Obtain technical information and pricing from material and equipment suppliers

  • Prepare documentation to support procurement of construction materials, equipment, and subcontracts

Design & Technical Reporting

  • Review drawings, specifications, and material lists

  • Prepare or assist with basic design drawings and drafting, as required

  • Conduct site surveys when necessary

  • Operate electrical testing equipment to support preparation of detailed technical reports

  • Read, prepare, and review non-routine technical and construction-related reports

General Duties

  • Perform other related duties of a minor nature that support construction project execution


Required Knowledge & Competencies

  • Excellent knowledge of Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical disciplines, with working knowledge of at least one additional discipline

  • Strong understanding of applicable standards and codes related to the primary discipline

  • Comprehensive construction knowledge related to generation, substation, and transmission & distribution facilities and associated equipment

  • Ability to provide technical direction and work coordination to construction trades

  • Solid understanding of project management principles

  • Good working knowledge of accounting and financial processes related to construction projects

  • Strong construction estimating and scheduling skills

  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to assess cost and schedule performance and recommend corrective actions

  • Proficiency in computer applications related to design, estimating, scheduling, costing, and project management

  • Basic drafting and design skills

Education & Experience

  • Diploma of Technology from a recognized institute of technology OR

  • Degree in a construction-related field such as Engineering, Forestry, Architecture, Project Management, Construction Management, Business Administration, or Quantity Surveying OR

  • A related trades qualification (e.g., Electrician, Winder, Power Line Technician, General Trades 1, Millwright)

Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in construction and/or project management

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle for site visits
