Job Title: Role: Mechanical Engineer - Hydropower Turbines

Location: Edmonds, BC (Hybrid – minimum 2 days per week in office)
Contract Duration: Jan 26th 2026 - Jan 22nd 2028
Hours: 37.5 per week
Max INC Rate: $108.11/
Max T4 Rate: $89.35/

Key Responsibilities

Develop safe, effective engineering solutions by applying sound judgment, initiative, and professional expertise on medium-complexity assignments.
Perform engineering design, analysis, problem resolution, and interpretation of engineering specifications for BC Hydro generation projects and operations.
Resolve complex and unusual mechanical design and field engineering problems through independent studies and technical analysis. Recommend safe, practical engineering designs to support successful project delivery and ongoing operations.
Assist project and operations management by supporting safety, cost, quality, and schedule objectives, proposing changes to plans and estimated costs, reviewing contractor work and recommending payments, preparing progress and technical reports, and coordinating schedules and technical interfaces with multiple stakeholders.
Participate in BC Hydro’s engineering practice by contributing to technical standards and best practices, exercising judgment in selecting methods, materials, and designs, and providing guidance and technical advice to other engineering professionals.
Travel to BC Hydro sites within British Columbia as required, approximately 2 to 3 times per year.

Mechanical Generation Specialty Responsibilities
Provide mechanical engineering and drafting support for hydro-electric generation station systems including hydraulic turbines and generators (Pelton, Francis, Kaplan), governor systems, intake, draft tube and maintenance gates, penstock inlet valves, and turbine inlet valves.
Support the creation, revision, and management of mechanical engineering drawings for generation station projects.
Use computer-aided drafting, modeling, and parametric design tools to produce two-dimensional and three-dimensional drawings.
Manage drawings using computerized drawing and document management systems.
Prepare drawings for site layouts, facility construction, equipment installation, and mechanical assemblies. Create customized drawings for non-standard engineering solutions.
Perform work in accordance with BC Hydro CADD standards. Perform basic to intermediate mechanical calculations to support design and drafting activities.

Required Qualifications
A minimum of eight years of experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent.
Registered Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist with Engineers and Geoscientists BC or other Canadian province
Expertise in hydropower turbines (Francis, Pelton, Kaplan), generators and or governor systems is strongly preferred
Project-based experience working with multiple stakeholders. Experience with computer-aided drafting and design, preferably in a utility or similar industrial environment.

Education and Training
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline. Successful completion of, or progress toward completion of, the BC Hydro Electrical System introductory course is an asset.

Professional Practice Requirements
Prior to commencement, the successful candidate must have their own sole practitioner Permit to Practice with EGBC or access to their firm’s Permit to Practice. EGBC registrants will work under BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan, Quality Management Pillar. The registrant must apply their own or their firm’s Permit to Practice number to any work that is sealed. All project documentation produced during the assignment will be retained by BC Hydro in accordance with EGBC bylaws. BC Hydro uses Digital Sign and Seal Technology and candidates may be required to subscribe to a Notarius digital seal service.

Additional Information
Preference is for local candidates, with consideration given to candidates willing to relocate at their own expense. Utility experience, experience in organizations similar in size and complexity to BC Hydro, and PMP certification are considered assets. Hybrid work arrangement with on-site presence required.
