Electrical Design Engineer
Location: Charlotte, NC, USA
Hybrid
Permanent role

Summary of the role

The Electrical Design Engineer will be a part of the  Electrical Power Systems (EPS) team and will focus on design. They will work with other engineers and drafters to support the hydroelectric field projects.

The following responsibilities form the core of this role:

  • Design and Calculation:
    • Calculate and design conduit and cable routes.
    • Develop detailed electrical schematics and layouts.
    • Modify and revise designs.
  • Testing and Commissioning:
    • Conduct electrical tests for Current Transformers (CTs) and Potential Transformers (PTs).
    • Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
  • Equipment Selection:
    • Select appropriate electrical equipment such as Motor Control Centers (MCCs), breakers, and other components.
    • Evaluate and recommend equipment based on project requirements and specifications.
    • Selection of instruments such as RTDs, pressure/level transducers, thermal relays, and others.
  • Project Coordination:
    • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders.
    • Ensure timely completion of projects within budget and scope.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience in electrical design and engineering.
  • Extensive field or design experience in hydropower or other energy sectors requiring deep understanding of large rotating equipment systems

Technical Proficiency:

  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in using design software such as Electrical AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar tools.
  • Able to read and interpret basic electrical and hydraulic schematics.
  • Knowledge of NEC, IEEE, NEMA, NETA, and other industry codes.

Problem-Solving:

  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex electrical issues.
  • Analytical skills to assess and optimize electrical systems.

Communication:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to convey technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Attention to Detail:

  • High level of accuracy in design and calculations.
  • Meticulous in ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.

Team Player:

    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
    • Collaborative mindset with a focus on achieving project goals.

Adaptability:

  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies.

Proactive Action:

  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to problem-solving and project management.
  • Delegate and direct work to drafters as required.
  • Ability to travel up to 50%.
