Job Description

Role: Engineer E4 - Electrical - Transmission - Reactive Equipment & Switchgear
Contract Start Date: 12 months
Work Location: Edmonds, BC
Rate: $90/INC - $96/INC

Experience and Role Accountabilities

• A minimum eight (8) years of experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent.
• Develop safe engineering solutions by using initiative and judgement to perform tasks including developing designs, analyzing and resolving problems, and interpreting engineering specifications on medium complexity and scope assignments for BC Hydro projects and operations.
• Assist project or operations management to meet safety, cost, quality, and time objectives by proposing changes in plans and estimated costs, recommending payment for work completed by contractors, preparing progress reports, coordinating work schedules and other similar tasks.
• Resolve highly technical and unusual design and field engineering problems by conducting independent studies and analysis, exercising independent judgment in selecting and interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs to support successful operations and/or project completion at BC Hydro.
• Participate in BC Hydro’s engineering practice by conducting independent studies and analysis, contributing to the development of technical standards, exercising judgment in selecting and interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs, and making decisions related to methods and designs as well as providing guidance and advice to other engineering professionals to develop future capability at BC Hydro. Important notes:
• Prior to commencement on assignment, the selected candidate must have their own sole practitioner, or the use of their firm’s, Permit to Practice with EGBC.
• EGBC Registrants provided to BC Hydro through this assignment shall work under BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan, Quality Management Pillar. The Registrant shall apply their own or their firm’s Permit to Practice Number to work that is Sealed by the Registrant. Retention and preservation of all project documentation produced by the Registrant during their contract with BC Hydro will be retained by BC Hydro to satisfy EGBC Bylaws. Education and Skills Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC or with another jurisdiction and eligible for registration as such with Engineers & Geoscientists BC
• BC Hydro uses a Digital Sign and Seal Technology. You may be required to subscribe to a digital seal technology service offered by Notarius
•Intermediate English skills for professional environment, written and spoken
•Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards
•Ability to use standard industry design/analysis software
•Intermediate MS Office skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

Additional Experience and Role Accountabilities

•This role requires experience with the design of electrical utility substations with operating voltages from 12kV to 500kV and demonstrated experience working with utility design solutions a in an electric utility environment.
• This position is needed to help with an increasing work load in capital project, emergency replacement and restoration work, asset management strategic OMA work programs and Owners Engineer review work.
• The position requires specialized knowledge of electrical power equipment so the ideal candidate would have some experience with the specification and installation of substation electrical equipment.
• Experience in one or both of the reactive or switchgear equipment areas is required.
• Key aspects of the reactive equipment area include:
o series capacitor stations o STATCOMS and power transformers o shunt reactors o instrument transformers
• Key aspects of the switchgear equipment area include:
o HV circuit breakers up to 550kV
o HV & MV GIS o metal clad switchgear
o circuit switchers
o disconnect switches
o fused cutouts
o station service switchgear o station surge arresters Additional

Education and Skills

• Ability to provide technical directions to junior engineers
• Ability to manage design tasks including scope, schedule and cost
• Ability to find engineering solutions that add value and to reach consensus
• Ability to communicate efficiently including verbal and technical writing in the English language, analytical, interpersonal communications and presentation skills
• Experience in project management including estimating, cost control and project administration

The Stations Equipment groups require equipment engineers with knowledge in, air insulated, medium voltage (2.4kV to 69kV) substation switchgear and reactive equipment to support their replacement programs.

Duties include:

1) Review system requirements and select suitable equipment.
2) Conduct site visits and complete site reports.
4) Complete material requests for new equipment.
5) Complete drawings reviews for new equipment.
6) Provide engineering support during install work.
7) Review test results from pre and post testing work.
8) Review field delegation report to check work is done satisfactory.
9) Signing off on TRCS for safe energization.
10) Outline any deficiencies.
11) Share information amongst team in particular any lessons learned.

Must have
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC or with another jurisdiction and eligible for registration as such with Engineers & Geoscientists BC
A minimum eight (8) years of experience in a relevant engineering field or equivalent.
Must have experience in medium and high voltage equipment.
