Electrical Engineer – MEP Building Design (Healthcare & Commercial)

About the Opportunity

Our client is an established MEP engineering and design consultancy in Houston with a healthy backlog of healthcare and commercial work. They're looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer who can own building electrical design from concept through construction, and who is on track to earn a PE license.

You'll lead electrical design on medical facilities and commercial buildings. That includes developing one-line diagrams, running fault-current and arc flash calculations, and working directly with utility providers to bring service to each project. This role suits an engineer who is ready to take on more responsibility and grow into licensed, project-leading work.

What You'll Do

Design Building Electrical Systems

• Engineer low- and medium-voltage power distribution for healthcare and commercial facilities.
• Develop one-line diagrams that define each project's electrical system architecture.
• Design emergency and standby power systems, including the essential electrical systems required in healthcare settings.
• Design lighting layouts, lighting controls, fire alarm, and life safety systems.
• Specify major equipment, including switchgear, panelboards, transformers, generators, and UPS systems.
• Apply energy-efficient design practices, including advanced lighting controls and energy code compliance.

Analyze and Document

• Perform load, fault-current, arc flash, and voltage drop calculations.
• Produce drawings and models in Revit MEP and AutoCAD.
• Prepare construction documents, technical reports, and cost estimates.
• Keep designs in line with the NEC, NFPA (including NFPA 99 and 110), IEEE standards, and local authority requirements.

Coordinate and Support Construction

• Coordinate with electric utility companies on service requirements, available fault current, and metering.
• Work alongside mechanical, plumbing, and architectural teams to deliver fully coordinated designs.
• Review submittals, respond to RFIs, and perform field observations during construction.

What You Bring

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
• 8–10 years of electrical design experience in an MEP consulting or building design environment.
• Direct design experience on both medical/healthcare and commercial projects.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit MEP.
• Ability to develop one-line diagrams and perform fault-current and arc flash calculations.
• Experience coordinating with electric utility providers.
• Strong working knowledge of the NEC and healthcare electrical requirements.
• Clear communication skills and strong technical writing.

Nice to Have

• EIT certification, with the goal of passing the PE exam in the near future.
• Experience with SKM, ETAP, or similar power system analysis software.
• Lighting design software experience (AGi32, Visual, or similar).
• Background with other mission-critical facilities, such as labs or data centers.
• Familiarity with BIM coordination workflows.
• LEED accreditation or a background in energy-efficient building design.
