Instrumentation & Control (I&C) Systems Engineer – Water & Wastewater

About the Opportunity

Our client is a multi-discipline engineering firm that is growing its controls group. They're looking for an experienced I&C Systems Engineer to lead control system design for municipal and industrial water and wastewater projects throughout the Midwest.

You'll work on both in-plant control systems and remote telemetry/SCADA projects. If you enjoy hands-on configuration, there's also room to take on HMI and PLC programming work. This role suits someone who likes owning the design package from concept through construction and working closely with clients and other engineering disciplines.

What You'll Do

Design and Documentation

• Develop P&IDs, control network architecture diagrams, equipment arrangements, and installation details.
• Write I&C specifications in CSI format covering instruments, control panels, networking equipment, and related components.
• Review BIM models, Revit families, and CAD files for quality and accuracy before they go into contract documents.

Project and Client Leadership

• Juggle several projects at once, keeping scope, schedule, and deliverables on track.
• Visit project sites and help lead client workshops to define control system requirements.
• Coordinate design across disciplines, including process/mechanical, electrical, structural, architectural, HVAC, plumbing, and civil.

Construction Support

• Review contractor submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs during construction.
• Inspect contractor I&C installations at water and wastewater plants, observe equipment testing, and sign off on completed work.

Team Development

• Mentor and guide junior engineers (preferred, not required).

What You Bring

• Bachelor's degree in engineering.
• 5+ years of relevant I&C or controls design experience.
• Working knowledge of instrumentation and equipment used in water/wastewater treatment or industrial processes.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD or AutoCAD Plant 3D, or a willingness to learn.
• Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort working directly with clients and other disciplines.
• An active P.E. license, or the ability to obtain one within your first year.

Nice to Have

• Experience configuring or programming control system software (HMI/PLC/SCADA).
• Electrical design experience.
