Senior Structural Engineer, P.E. — Florida & New Jersey

Location: Florida-based
Travel: Approximately 50–60%

The Opportunity

An established engineering consulting firm is seeking a seasoned Structural Engineer who is equally comfortable evaluating a building in the field, defending a technical conclusion in a client meeting, and taking professional responsibility for the final engineering work product.

This is not a desk-only design position. The engineer who succeeds here will spend significant time at commercial, multifamily, condominium, and other complex properties throughout Florida, New Jersey, and additional project locations. You will investigate existing conditions, determine what is structurally significant, develop practical repair or construction solutions, and communicate findings with authority.

We need an experienced professional whose judgment has been tested on real buildings—not someone who relies exclusively on software output or waits for others to make difficult technical decisions. This position carries meaningful client exposure, field responsibility, and influence over how projects move from investigation through design and construction.

What You Will Own

• Lead structural evaluations of existing commercial, condominium, multifamily, and institutional properties.
• Investigate deterioration, storm-related damage, construction deficiencies, water intrusion, cracking, movement, corrosion, and other conditions affecting structural performance.
• Translate field observations into technically defensible conclusions, repair recommendations, drawings, specifications, and signed and sealed reports.
• Serve as Engineer of Record when assigned, maintaining control over engineering quality, code compliance, documentation, and professional risk.
• Develop repair and restoration strategies involving concrete, masonry, structural steel, wood framing, foundations, façades, balconies, parking structures, and building-envelope interfaces.
• Perform and review structural calculations for gravity, wind, lateral, and existing-condition evaluations.
• Conduct milestone inspections, recertification-related assessments, construction observations, and structural integrity assignments where applicable.
• Oversee active construction work to confirm that contractors are following permitted documents and the approved repair approach.
• Identify field conflicts early and provide practical direction without compromising engineering standards.
• Review shop drawings, submittals, change requests, testing results, contractor proposals, and requests for information.
• Prepare scopes of work, bid documents, technical specifications, repair details, and cost opinions.
• Represent property owners and association boards during contractor meetings, project reviews, and technical discussions.
• Explain complicated building conditions to clients in direct, understandable language.
• Coordinate with architects, contractors, specialty consultants, testing agencies, property managers, attorneys, and insurance professionals.
• Provide technical leadership to project engineers, inspectors, designers, and drafting personnel.
• Support several concurrent assignments while keeping field commitments, deliverables, budgets, and client expectations under control.
• Respond to urgent site conditions and travel to project locations when the work requires an experienced engineer on the ground.

Required Background

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
• Active and unrestricted Professional Engineer license in Florida.
• Active and unrestricted Professional Engineer license in New Jersey.
• At least eight years of progressively responsible structural engineering experience; ten or more years is strongly preferred.
• Substantial experience evaluating, designing, repairing, or restoring existing buildings.
• Demonstrated ability to make independent engineering decisions and stand behind those decisions.
• Strong working knowledge of the Florida Building Code, New Jersey construction requirements, IBC, ASCE 7, ACI standards, and other structural codes applicable to the work.
• Experience with concrete, masonry, steel, wood, foundations, and building-envelope-related structural conditions.
• Ability to produce and critically review calculations, technical reports, construction documents, and repair specifications.
• Experience using structural analysis and design software together with AutoCAD, Revit, or comparable production tools.
• Strong written communication and the presence to lead meetings involving owners, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders.
• Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel approximately 50–60% of the time.
• Primary residence in Florida with reasonable access to commercial air travel.

Field and Travel Expectations

This position requires frequent travel, generally 50–60%, including regular trips within Florida and recurring travel to New Jersey. Additional travel may be required based on project locations and storm-response needs.

Fieldwork may involve outdoor weather conditions, active construction environments, roofs, balconies, façades, ladders, scaffolding, parking garages, mechanical spaces, and other areas with limited or difficult access. Reasonable accommodations will be considered where applicable.
