Senior Mainframe z/OS Engineer (JOB-4667)
Location: REMOTE
Employment Type: Direct-Hire | Full-Time
Salary Range: Based on experience + bonus eligibility

Capstone IT is partnering with a leading financial services organization to hire a Senior Mainframe z/OS Engineer for a direct-hire, fully remote opportunity. This role is part of a managed services engineering team responsible for supporting, maintaining, and expanding enterprise customer IBM z Systems environments.

The Senior Mainframe z/OS Engineer will maintain production z/OS systems, resolve complex technical issues escalated beyond operations, and plan and execute customer system migrations. This role requires deep z/OS operating system expertise, strong mainframe networking experience, and hands-on support of storage, tape, and major subsystems.

Occasional after-hours and weekend support is required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and support enterprise customer z/OS environments
• Support and resolve complex mainframe incidents not handled by operations
• Plan and execute customer system migrations (tape save/restore or replication)
• Ensure proper execution of system backups and recovery processes
• Install, maintain, and configure z/OS, major subsystems, and ISV products
• Perform OS upgrades, PTF deployment, and major subsystem releases
• Assist with hardware configuration, capacity expansion, and system upgrades
• Configure and manage LPARs using the Hardware Management Console (HMC)
• Support mainframe networking and connectivity (VTAM, TCP/IP)
• Support storage and tape environments, including physical and virtual tape libraries
• Maintain system documentation and golden/sandbox system templates
• Work with customers on FNTS onboarding or remote management setup
• Participate in infrastructure initiatives as the Mainframe Subject Matter Expert (SME)
• Perform customer-requested reporting
• Provide occasional after-hours and weekend support

Qualifications:

• 10+ years of experience as a Mainframe Systems Engineer
• Deep hands-on expertise with the z/OS operating system (JES2, SDSF, TSO/ISPF, RACF, HCD/IODF, SMP/E)
• Strong working knowledge of z/OS subsystems (JES2, WLM, OMVS/USS, SMF/RMF, RACF, ASM, GRS)
• Proven ability to support major mainframe subsystems (CICS, IMS, DB2, MQ Series)
• Solid understanding of mainframe communication and networking (VTAM, TCP/IP, TLS)
• Demonstrated capability configuring TCP/IP servers in IPv4 environments (IPv6 desired)
• Hands-on background in storage management (SMS, HSM, DFDSS, VSAM, IDCAMS, ICF Catalogs)
• Working knowledge of storage architectures and performance considerations (JBOD, RAID, SAN)
• Familiarity with physical and virtual tape library configuration and implementation
• Strong knowledge of IBM z Systems hardware
• Proficiency configuring LPARs using the Hardware Management Console (HMC)
• Capability performing OS upgrades, PTF deployment, and software installation
• Working knowledge of automation and monitoring tool configuration and deployment
• Ability to define and troubleshoot printer configurations
• Self-motivated and able to work independently
• Strong communication skills (written, verbal, presentations)

Preferred:

• Sysplex design or implementation experience
• IPv6 configuration or support experience
• Printer configuration and troubleshooting experience
• Experience with storage architectures (JBOD, RAID, SAN) and performance considerations
