Capstone IT is helping our client find a Senior Mainframe z/OS Engineer who will support and maintain enterprise z/OS environments within a managed services model. This role focuses on day-to-day mainframe operations, system maintenance, customer migrations, OS and subsystem upgrades, and break/fix escalation work. The engineer will partner closely with customers and internal teams to keep systems stable, scalable, and secure while supporting ongoing modernization and infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and support customer z/OS environments in a managed services setting
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex incidents escalated beyond operations teams
• Plan and execute customer migrations using tape or replication technologies
• Install, configure, and maintain OS, subsystems, and ISV products
• Perform OS upgrades, PTF deployment, and major subsystem releases
• Support hardware upgrades, LPAR configuration, and capacity expansion
• Maintain system documentation, templates, and sandbox/golden environments
• Participate as the mainframe SME on infrastructure and roadmap initiatives
• Provide occasional after-hours and weekend support

Qualifications

• 10+ years of hands-on mainframe systems engineering experience
• Strong knowledge of z/OS internals, subsystems, and utilities
• Experience with HMC, LPAR configuration, and z Systems hardware
• Storage experience across JBOD, RAID, SAN, and virtual tape libraries
• TCP/IP configuration and troubleshooting (IPv4 required; IPv6 preferred)
• Experience with automation, monitoring tools, and printer configurations
• Nice to have: Sysplex experience, remote managed services environments
