Job Description
Step into a high-impact leadership role overseeing complex offshore drilling campaigns in one of the region’s most dynamic operating environments. This is a chance to take full ownership of deepwater and high-angle operations, driving safe, efficient delivery of wells that are critical to the asset’s performance. You’ll be the central technical and operational authority, coordinating multi-disciplinary teams and contractors to deliver wells on time, on budget, and without compromise on HSE.
About the Role:
As Contract Drilling Superintendent, you will manage end-to-end drilling operations, from detailed well planning through to execution and close-out. You will provide onshore operational leadership to offshore drilling teams and service providers, ensuring alignment with drilling programmes, company standards, and regulatory requirements in Myanmar. Your decisions will directly influence operational risk, cost efficiency, and well integrity across deepwater, high-angle, horizontal, and OHGP completion activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead day-to-day management of offshore drilling operations, ensuring activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in line with approved drilling programmes.
- Oversee detailed well planning, including trajectory design for deepwater, high-angle, and horizontal wells, ensuring technical feasibility and operational practicality.
- Coordinate and direct rig-site personnel, service companies, and logistics to maintain optimal operational performance and minimise non-productive time.
- Monitor real-time drilling performance, identify deviations and risks, and implement corrective actions to maintain well objectives and integrity.
- Lead risk assessments, HAZIDs, and HSE reviews for drilling operations, embedding best practice and ensuring compliance with company and regulatory standards.
- Manage operational reporting, cost tracking, and performance benchmarking, providing clear updates and recommendations to senior management.
- Conduct post-well reviews and lessons-learned sessions, driving continuous improvement in drilling practices, equipment selection, and contractor performance.
Key Requirements:
- Proven experience in a Drilling Superintendent or Senior Drilling Engineer role with direct responsibility for offshore drilling operations.
- Strong background in deepwater drilling operations, including well control, rig capabilities, and associated technical challenges.
- Demonstrated expertise in planning and executing high-angle and horizontal wells, including complex trajectories and torque/drag management.
- Hands-on experience with open hole gravel pack completions (OHGP), from design through to execution and troubleshooting.
- Solid understanding of well engineering principles, including casing design, mud systems, cementing, and well integrity management.
- Strong HSE and risk management focus, with a track record of leading safe operations and implementing risk mitigation measures.
- Proven leadership and team coordination skills, with the ability to direct multi-disciplinary teams and manage multiple contractors in a high-pressure environment.
- Ability to work on a residential assignment basis supporting operations in Myanmar, including responsiveness to operational issues outside standard hours.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience working in Southeast Asia or similar regulatory and operational environments.
- Familiarity with Horizontal Drilling, high Angle wells and Deepwater developments
- Exposure to subsea wellheads, completions, and deepwater marine operations.
- Experience with performance drilling initiatives, data analytics, and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Strong reporting and presentation skills for communicating with senior management and partners.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Valid IWCF or IADC Well Control certification at Supervisor level.
- Additional HSE or risk management certifications (e.g. NEBOSH, IOSH) preferred.
- Professional membership of a relevant industry body (e.g. SPE) advantageous.
