Packaging & Material Flow Engineer
Location: Bowling Green, KY
Position Overview
A high-volume manufacturing organization is seeking a motivated Packaging & Material Flow Engineer to ensure all OEM packaging specifications are quoted, implemented, and fully integrated into plant operating instructions. In this role, you will lead the returnable container program, drive supplier packaging compliance, and support continuous material flow process improvements. You will work closely with engineering, purchasing, and production teams to design protective packaging, optimize line-side racking, and streamline manufacturing workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead packaging quoting activities and maintain and improve the plant's Plan for Every Part (PFEP).
- Prepare and interpret AutoCAD and SolidWorks designs, drawings, and specifications for protective packaging containers, line-side racks, and components.
- Implement and manage returnable packaging programs with suppliers, evaluating feasibility, costs, and packaging compliance.
- Set up and review packaging test packs with suppliers at plant locations and maintain up-to-date supplier packaging databases.
- Collaborate with Value Stream Leads to improve shop floor material flow, process automation, cycle times, and ergonomics.
- Optimize rack design to increase shipment density and returnable container efficiency.
- Facilitate change management processes and document current and proposed process flows to streamline operations.
- Assist in inspecting mechanical installations and construction of racking systems.
Required Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in a related field OR 3+ years of manufacturing experience handling packaging designs.
- Proven ability to prepare and interpret AutoCAD and SolidWorks designs and drawings for packaging and racking systems.
- Experience managing returnable container programs and OEM packaging specifications.
- Working knowledge of material flow concepts, PFEP, and manufacturing methods.
- Strong problem-solving, technical presentation, and written/verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with computer applications including Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Ability to work flexible hours, overtime, and travel as needed to meet operational goals.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience operating standard office equipment.
- Exposure to Lean/5S concepts, World Class Manufacturing (WCM) benchmarks, or Training Within Industry (TWI).
