Steel Estimator
Location: Holland, MI
Position Overview:
Our client is a commercial steel fabrication and installation company seeking an experienced Steel Estimator to support the preconstruction and bidding process. This office-based position is responsible for reviewing project documents, preparing accurate cost estimates, evaluating project scope, and collaborating with internal teams to develop competitive proposals. This role plays a critical part in securing new business and ensuring projects are positioned for a successful transition into operations.
Key Responsibilities:
• Prepare detailed material takeoffs for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, joists, and decking.
• Analyze architectural, structural, and mechanical drawings to develop accurate project estimates.
• Estimate labor, fabrication, coatings, freight, and field installation costs.
• Utilize estimating software to prepare, organize, and manage bid packages.
• Review project specifications to identify scope gaps, exclusions, and potential risks.
• Prepare Requests for Information (RFIs) during the preconstruction phase.
• Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing.
• Develop complete bid proposals, including scope of work, qualifications, and exclusions.
• Participate in project turnover meetings to ensure a smooth handoff to project management.
Key Qualifications:
• Minimum of 5 years of structural steel and miscellaneous metals estimating experience.
• Ability to interpret structural, architectural, and mechanical drawings.
• Experience using steel estimating software.
• Strong blueprint reading skills.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills preferred.
• Working knowledge of AWS and AISC standards strongly preferred.
• Previous estimating experience with a structural steel fabricator or steel erector strongly preferred.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
