Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager
Location: Birmingham, AL
Position Overview
A well-established automotive manufacturing organization is seeking an experienced Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager to lead all environmental, health, and safety functions at their facility. This role is responsible for driving full regulatory compliance, leading EHS strategy and systems, and ensuring alignment with company standards including OSHA, ADEM, EPA, ISO 14001, IATF 16949, and internal requirements. This is a highly visible leadership role requiring a strong, confident communicator who can enforce standards, hold others accountable, and influence cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & EHS Strategy
- Provide overall leadership, direction, and accountability for all EHS programs and initiatives at the facility.
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive Environmental, Health & Safety management systems aligned with corporate and regulatory standards.
- Serve as the Management Representative for ISO 14001 and IATF 16949 environmental requirements.
- Champion a “Safety First” culture through visible leadership, accountability, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Partner with plant leadership to proactively identify and mitigate operational, environmental, and workplace risks.
Compliance & Regulatory Management
- Ensure full compliance with OSHA, ADEM, EPA, ISO 14001, IATF 16949, and internal standards.
- Act as primary point of contact for all regulatory agencies including OSHA, ADEM, and EPA during audits, inspections, and site visits.
- Lead preparation, coordination, and response efforts for all external and internal audits.
- Oversee environmental permitting, reporting, recordkeeping, and compliance documentation.
Audits, Risk & Continuous Improvement
- Lead planned and unplanned safety and environmental audits and inspections across the facility.
- Conduct risk assessments and drive corrective and preventive actions to eliminate hazards and reduce nonconformance.
- Utilize root cause analysis to investigate incidents, injuries, and environmental events and implement sustainable corrective actions.
- Maintain and track Actionlinx (or equivalent systems) ensuring deadlines and corrective actions are met.
Workers’ Compensation & Incident Management
- Partner with HR and leadership to identify opportunities to reduce Workers’ Compensation exposure and costs.
- Oversee incident investigations, reporting, and evidence preparation for claims, hearings, and regulatory reviews.
- Ensure consistent application of corrective actions and accountability following incidents.
Training, Communication & Culture
- Develop and deliver EHS training programs to employees, supervisors, and leadership teams.
- Build training plans to ensure ongoing competency in environmental compliance, occupational safety, and regulatory requirements.
- Promote strong housekeeping and 5S practices throughout the facility.
Leadership Expectations (Critical Success Factor)
- Must be willing to enforce policies without hesitation.
- Comfortable having difficult conversations, including addressing non-compliance directly with employees and leadership.
- Able to engage with regulatory agencies professionally and firmly while protecting company interests.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or related field.
- 5–8+ years of progressive EHS experience in a manufacturing environment (automotive preferred).
- Strong working knowledge of ADEM, OSHA, EPA regulations, and environmental permitting requirements.
- Proven experience with ISO 14001 and IATF 16949 audit systems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead audits, manage regulatory interactions, and drive compliance programs.
- Strong background in air, stormwater, wastewater, and environmental compliance programs.
