Job Description

Step into a high-impact commissioning role with a leading engineering organisation delivering complex industrial and infrastructure projects across Sydney. You’ll take ownership of critical commissioning phases, ensuring systems are tested, integrated and handed over safely, on time and to specification. This is a contract opportunity suited to a hands-on engineer who thrives in fast-paced project environments and enjoys seeing systems come to life.

About the Role:
In this role, you will plan, coordinate and execute commissioning activities across multiple projects, ensuring all systems meet design, safety and performance requirements. You will work closely with project managers, construction teams and clients to align commissioning schedules, mitigate risks and resolve technical issues. Your expertise in control systems and PLC programming will underpin safe, efficient start-up and optimisation of plant and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed commissioning plans, procedures and schedules aligned with overall project timelines.
  • Lead and execute commissioning, testing and start-up activities for control systems, PLCs and associated equipment.
  • Coordinate commissioning activities with construction, operations and vendor teams to ensure seamless integration and handover.
  • Conduct functional, performance and integration tests in line with TIC procedures and project specifications.
  • Identify, assess and manage commissioning-related risks, implementing appropriate mitigation and safety measures.
  • Prepare and maintain commissioning documentation, including test records, punch lists, and handover packages.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve control system and PLC-related issues during commissioning, escalating as required.
  • Participate in site meetings, providing progress updates and technical input to support project delivery.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Commissioning Engineer on industrial, infrastructure or process plant projects.
  • Strong background in commissioning planning, execution and coordination on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Demonstrated capability in applying risk assessment methodologies and ensuring safety compliance on site.
  • Hands-on experience with control systems, PLC programming and field instrumentation.
  • Solid understanding of Testing, Inspection and Commissioning (TIC) procedures and standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, control narratives and functional specifications.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple commissioning activities and deadlines.
  • Clear communication skills for liaising with clients, contractors and internal stakeholders.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with SCADA, HMI and industrial communication networks.
  • Exposure to large infrastructure projects (e.g. water, power, transport or manufacturing).
  • Familiarity with Australian standards and regulations relevant to commissioning and electrical/control systems.
  • Experience working within structured project management frameworks or methodologies.

Qualifications:

  • Degree or Diploma in Electrical, Control Systems, Mechatronics or related Engineering discipline.
  • Trade qualification in Electrical or Instrumentation (preferred but not essential, depending on background).
  • Relevant industry training or certification in commissioning, safety (e.g. WHS, risk management) or project delivery (preferred).
