Step into a senior role where your expertise in industrial controls and automation will directly shape complex manufacturing and process systems across Michigan. This contract opportunity offers high-impact work on diverse projects, from greenfield installations to upgrades, with the autonomy to lead technical decisions and guide implementation. Youll be working with leading technologies and OEM platforms, driving performance, reliability, and safety for major industrial clients.
About the Role:
As a Senior Controls Engineer, you will take ownership of the design, programming, and integration of control systems, ensuring robust, efficient operation across multiple projects. You will serve as the technical lead for PLC, robotics, and drive systems, translating project requirements into practical, well-documented solutions. Your work will influence project outcomes end-to-end, from concept through commissioning, while coordinating closely with cross-functional teams and client stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, program, and debug PLC control logic and HMI applications using platforms such as Allen-Bradley and Siemens for new and existing automation systems.
- Interpret and refine electrical schematics, and lead the design of control panels, including component selection, layout, and adherence to relevant standards.
- Integrate and program industrial robots (e.g., Fanuc, ABB) for material handling, assembly, and process applications, including path programming and I/O interfacing.
- Configure and commission VFDs and motor control systems, optimizing performance and ensuring proper protection, feedback, and communications.
- Lead on-site startup, testing, and commissioning activities, including troubleshooting control systems, resolving integration issues, and validating system functionality.
- Coordinate project activities with mechanical, electrical, and process engineering teams, as well as vendors and contractors, to ensure aligned designs and schedules.
- Prepare and maintain detailed documentation, including control narratives, I/O lists, panel drawings, and change records, to support long-term system maintenance.
- Provide technical guidance and oversight to junior engineers and technicians, ensuring adherence to best practices and project standards.
Key Requirements:
- Extensive hands-on experience in PLC programming and troubleshooting with major platforms such as Allen-Bradley (RSLogix/Studio 5000) and Siemens (TIA Portal, Step 7).
- Proven ability to read, interpret, and work from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control system drawings for industrial automation projects.
- Strong background in control panel design, including knowledge of industrial components, wiring practices, and relevant codes/standards.
- Demonstrated experience in robotics integration and programming with brands such as Fanuc and ABB, including setup, teach pendant programming, and safety integration.
- Solid understanding of VFD configuration, motor control systems, and associated power and control wiring in industrial environments.
- Track record of leading controls projects from concept through commissioning, managing scope, timelines, and technical risks.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate clearly with clients, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve complex controls and automation issues under time constraints.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with additional PLC and HMI platforms (e.g., Schneider, Omron, Ignition, Wonderware).
- Familiarity with industrial communication networks and protocols (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Profibus, Modbus, OPC UA).
- Knowledge of safety PLCs, machine safety standards, and integration of safety devices (light curtains, safety relays, interlocks).
- Exposure to MES/SCADA systems and data integration between controls and higher-level systems.
- Experience working in automotive, food & beverage, or other high-volume manufacturing sectors.
- Ability to create and maintain standardized templates, libraries, and best-practice documentation for controls projects.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls/Automation Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Significant industry experience in controls engineering, with senior-level responsibilities on complex automation projects.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent credential is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Relevant vendor or platform certifications (e.g., Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Fanuc, ABB) preferred.
- Formal training in project management or possession of a PMP certification is an asset for coordinating multi-stakeholder projects.
If you are a seasoned Controls Engineer ready to take on technically challenging, high-visibility projects across Michigan, we invite you to apply and bring your expertise to this contract opportunity.
