Job Description

Step into a critical engineering role where your welding expertise directly safeguards quality, safety, and performance across high-profile projects. This is a contract opportunity with a company that values technical precision, rigorous standards, and practical problem-solving in every weld.

About the Role:
As a Contract Weld Engineer, you will lead the development, qualification, and optimization of welding processes to ensure compliance with AWS D1.1 and other relevant codes. You will serve as the technical authority for weld procedures, inspections, and defect resolution, working closely with production and quality teams to maintain consistent, code-compliant results. Your work will have a direct impact on reducing defects, improving productivity, and ensuring the integrity of critical structures and components.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, review, and qualify Weld Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) for SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and FCAW processes.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance to welding personnel on process parameters, techniques, and best practices to meet code and project requirements.
  • Plan and oversee non-destructive examination (VT, PT, MT, UT, RT) activities in coordination with inspection and quality teams.
  • Investigate weld defects and failures using structured root cause analysis methodologies and define effective corrective and preventive actions.
  • Audit welding operations and documentation for compliance with AWS D1.1 and other applicable welding codes and standards.
  • Support production planning by advising on weld sequencing, joint design, and process selection to optimize quality and throughput.
  • Prepare clear technical reports, weld maps, and inspection records to document procedures, test results, and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and project management to resolve welding-related issues and support successful project delivery.

Key Requirements:

  • Strong practical experience with SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and FCAW welding processes in an industrial or structural environment.
  • Proven track record in developing, qualifying, and implementing WPS/PQRs in accordance with AWS and related standards.
  • Demonstrated competence in non-destructive examination methods, including VT, PT, MT, UT, and RT, from an engineering/oversight perspective.
  • In-depth working knowledge of AWS D1.1 and familiarity with other relevant welding codes and specifications.
  • Experience conducting root cause analysis on weld defects and implementing corrective and preventive actions.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, and technical specifications accurately.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to provide clear technical guidance to welders, inspectors, and engineers.
  • Organized and detail-focused approach to documentation, record-keeping, and procedure control.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in structural steel, heavy fabrication, or pressure equipment environments.
  • Exposure to lean manufacturing or continuous improvement initiatives related to welding operations.
  • Familiarity with additional codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API) relevant to welded components.
  • Background in automation or robotic welding systems.
  • Prior experience in a contract or consulting weld engineering role.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline preferred.
  • Associate degree in welding technology or equivalent technical training considered with strong relevant experience.
  • AWS Certified Welding Engineer (CWEng), Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), or similar certification strongly preferred.
  • Formal training or certification in non-destructive examination methods is an advantage.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development in welding engineering and related standards.

If you are a weld engineering professional who thrives on technical challenges and code-compliant execution, apply now to contribute your expertise to demanding projects in Utah.
