Job Description

Step into a hands-on role where your mechanical expertise and precision craftsmanship directly shape high-performance industrial machinery. This contract opportunity offers variety, technical challenge, and the chance to contribute to complex builds in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

About the Role:
As a Contract Machine Builder, you will be responsible for assembling, aligning, and commissioning custom machinery to exact specifications. You will play a key role in ensuring equipment is built correctly the first time, supporting reliable operation and long-term performance for customers across multiple industries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assemble mechanical components, sub-assemblies, and complete machines according to engineering drawings and build documentation
  • Perform precision measurement, alignment, and fit-up of mechanical assemblies using appropriate tools and gauges
  • Install and route mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems, including tubing, hoses, and fittings
  • Assist with basic PLC and controls wiring, device installation, and panel layout under guidance from controls engineers
  • Conduct preventive maintenance tasks on machinery and equipment, including inspection, lubrication, and replacement of wear parts
  • Support machine testing, startup, and functional checks to verify proper operation and performance
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues during build and commissioning, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions
  • Maintain accurate build records, assembly notes, and documentation to support quality and traceability

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience in mechanical assembly or machine building within an industrial or manufacturing environment
  • Strong ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and assembly instructions
  • Proficiency with precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, alignment equipment) for tight-tolerance work
  • Familiarity with PLCs and industrial control systems sufficient to support basic installation and functional checks
  • Solid understanding of preventive maintenance practices and mechanical reliability principles
  • Competence in using hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely and effectively
  • Strong attention to detail, with a focus on build quality and adherence to specifications
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and meet project deadlines in a contract setting

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience building custom or special-purpose machinery, automation equipment, or production lines
  • Exposure to servo systems, VFDs, sensors, and other industrial automation components
  • Background in hydraulic and pneumatic system assembly, troubleshooting, and commissioning
  • Experience supporting factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site installation/startup activities
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing or continuous improvement practices in a build environment

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Technical certificate or diploma in Mechanical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, or a related field preferred
  • Apprenticeship or formal training in machine building, industrial maintenance, or mechanical assembly beneficial
  • Relevant safety training (e.g., OSHA, lockout/tagout) and equipment-specific training advantageous

If you are a detail-focused machine builder who enjoys hands-on work with complex mechanical systems, we encourage you to apply for this contract opportunity.
