Youll work at the intersection of mechanical design, controls, and sensing technologies, driving reliable, efficient systems from concept through commissioning. This is a hands-on contract position suited to an engineer who enjoys end-to-end ownership of robotic systems in a fast-paced industrial environment.
About the Role:
You will be responsible for designing, developing, and integrating robotic systems within industrial automation settings, ensuring they meet performance, safety, and reliability standards. Working closely with cross-functional teams, youll translate operational requirements into robust mechanical designs, PLC-controlled architectures, and sensor-driven solutions. Your work will directly impact productivity, quality, and throughput across multiple manufacturing operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop robotic systems and workcells, including mechanical layout, component selection, and integration with existing automation equipment.
- Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLCs to control robotic motion, sequencing, and safety interlocks for industrial applications.
- Integrate, calibrate, and validate sensors (e.g., vision, proximity, force/torque, encoders) to ensure accurate detection, positioning, and feedback in robotic systems.
- Create detailed CAD models and technical drawings for robotic assemblies, fixtures, and tooling, ensuring manufacturability and compliance with standards.
- Conduct system-level testing, debugging, and optimization of robotic and automation solutions to achieve required cycle times and reliability.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and controls teams to ensure seamless integration of robots into production lines and automation cells.
- Prepare technical documentation, including system specifications, wiring diagrams, and operating procedures, to support installation and maintenance.
- Provide on-site support during installation, commissioning, and acceptance testing of robotic systems at customer or plant locations.
Key Requirements:
- Proven experience in robotic system design within industrial or manufacturing environments.
- Strong proficiency in PLC programming (e.g., ladder logic, function blocks) for automation and motion control.
- Hands-on experience with industrial automation equipment such as conveyors, actuators, drives, and safety systems.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate and calibrate industrial sensors and instrumentation for control and monitoring.
- Proficiency in CAD modeling and generating accurate technical drawings for mechanical components and assemblies.
- Ability to interpret engineering schematics, mechanical drawings, and electrical diagrams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for diagnosing and resolving issues in complex automation systems.
- Willingness to work on-site in Ohio manufacturing/industrial facilities as required for project execution.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with specific robot brands and controllers (e.g., Fanuc, ABB, KUKA, Yaskawa).
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, ProfiNet, Modbus).
- Exposure to machine vision systems and image processing for robotic guidance and inspection.
- Knowledge of safety standards and risk assessments related to robotic and automated systems.
- Experience with simulation tools for robotic path planning or cell layout validation.
- Background in optimizing production line throughput and OEE using automation and robotics.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a closely related field.
- Associate degree in a technical discipline with significant relevant experience may be considered.
- Professional certifications in robotics, PLC programming, or industrial automation are advantageous.
- CAD training or certification (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar) preferred.
