Job Description

Step into a hands-on role where your mechanical expertise and problem-solving skills directly keep complex automation systems running at peak performance. This is a contract opportunity with a Michigan-based operation that relies on skilled machine builders to assemble, troubleshoot, and improve production equipment in a fast-paced, safety-focused environment.

About the Role:
You will be responsible for building, assembling, and modifying industrial machinery and automation systems from mechanical and electrical prints, ensuring equipment is installed and operating to specification. Working closely with maintenance, engineering, and production teams, you will diagnose issues, perform precision adjustments, and carry out repairs that minimise downtime and support continuous improvement. Your work will have a direct impact on equipment reliability, safety, and overall production efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assemble and build industrial machinery and automation equipment using mechanical drawings, schematics, and work instructions.
  • Perform mechanical fabrication tasks including cutting, drilling, fitting, and aligning components to tight tolerances.
  • Troubleshoot PLC-controlled automation systems at the machine level to identify and resolve faults impacting operation.
  • Conduct precision measurement and inspection of components and assemblies using tools such as micrometers, calipers, and gauges.
  • Install, connect, and service hydraulic and pneumatic components, valves, cylinders, and related control devices.
  • Execute preventive maintenance routines on machinery, documenting findings and performing corrective actions as needed.
  • Carry out mechanical repairs, component replacements, and adjustments to restore equipment to safe, reliable operation.
  • Follow OSHA and MIOSHA safety standards in all tasks, maintaining a clean, organized work area and proper use of PPE.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience in machine building or industrial mechanical assembly in a manufacturing or automation environment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on skills in assembly, alignment, and mechanical fit-up of complex equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot automation systems, including PLC-controlled machinery at the hardware and I/O level.
  • Proficiency in using precision measurement tools for inspection and verification of parts and assemblies.
  • Practical knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including reading related schematics and diagnosing common faults.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and repair on production machinery or automated equipment.
  • Solid understanding of OSHA and MIOSHA safety requirements and safe work practices in an industrial setting.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, basic electrical schematics, and technical documentation.

Desirable Skills:

  • Exposure to multiple PLC platforms (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens) for basic fault-finding and parameter adjustments.
  • Experience in a high-volume manufacturing or automotive-related environment.
  • Familiarity with root cause analysis and reliability-focused maintenance practices.
  • Basic welding, machining, or metalworking skills for fabrication and repair tasks.
  • Experience with CMMS or maintenance work order systems for documenting activities.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical certificate or apprenticeship in industrial maintenance, machine building, or related mechanical trade preferred.
  • Vocational or community college coursework in mechanical systems, automation, or mechatronics beneficial.
  • Safety training certifications related to OSHA/MIOSHA, lockout/tagout, and industrial equipment operation advantageous.

If you are a skilled machine builder who takes pride in precise, safe, and reliable work, this contract role offers an immediate opportunity to apply your expertise on critical equipment in a Michigan facility. Apply now to be considered for upcoming projects.
