Step into a high-impact contract role where your mechanical design expertise directly shapes innovative products for a fast-paced engineering environment. Youll work at the intersection of design, manufacturing, and product development, turning concepts into robust, manufacturable solutions that meet demanding performance and quality standards.
About the Role:
You will be responsible for developing and refining mechanical designs from concept through to prototype and production-ready models, ensuring they meet functional, cost, and manufacturability targets. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you will translate requirements into detailed CAD models and drawings, applying rigorous GD&T to ensure consistency and reliability. Your work will support key projects and drive continuous improvement in product performance and design processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create and update 3D CAD models and detailed engineering drawings for mechanical components and assemblies.
- Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to define critical dimensions, tolerances, and datums for manufacturability and quality control.
- Develop and iterate mechanical concepts, performing design reviews and incorporating feedback from engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.
- Lead or contribute to root cause analysis for design-related issues, implementing corrective actions and design improvements.
- Support product development activities, including prototyping, testing support, and design validation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure designs meet performance, reliability, cost, and schedule objectives.
- Manage assigned design tasks and mini-projects, including planning, tracking progress, and reporting status to project leads.
- Prepare and maintain design documentation, including BOMs, specifications, and revision control in accordance with company standards.
Key Requirements:
- Strong hands-on experience in mechanical design of components and assemblies in an engineering or manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling and 2D drafting using industry-standard CAD software.
- Solid understanding and practical application of GD&T per relevant standards (e.g., ASME Y14.5).
- Demonstrated ability to conduct structured problem solving and root cause analysis for mechanical design and performance issues.
- Experience working within product development lifecycles, from concept through prototyping and into production support.
- Proven ability to manage workload and priorities in a project-driven, deadline-oriented environment.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with cross-functional teams.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience designing for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA) in high-volume or precision manufacturing contexts.
- Exposure to testing and validation processes, including interpretation of test data and feedback into design iterations.
- Familiarity with PLM or PDM systems for design data management and revision control.
- Background in working with suppliers or external manufacturing partners on design-related topics.
- Experience with tolerance stack-up analysis and basic engineering calculations for mechanical design.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Relevant CAD training or certification demonstrating advanced modeling and drafting capability.
- Additional coursework or certification in GD&T is preferred.
- Professional engineering experience in a mechanical design role, ideally within product development or manufacturing-focused organisations.
If you are a detail-driven mechanical design engineer who enjoys turning ideas into robust, manufacturable solutions, this contract role offers an excellent opportunity to make a tangible impactapply now to be considered.
