About the Role:
This contract Senior Controls Engineer position is responsible for designing, programming, and commissioning industrial control systems, ensuring seamless integration of PLCs, HMI/SCADA, and FANUC robots. You will lead controls engineering activities from concept through startup, driving technical decisions that impact throughput, quality, and operator safety. Working closely with cross-functional teams and customers, you will be the technical authority for controls architecture and implementation on key automation projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and implement PLC programs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.) for new and existing automated equipment and production lines.
  • Configure, program, and integrate FANUC robots, including motion paths, I/O mapping, and coordination with PLC and safety systems.
  • Develop and integrate HMI/SCADA applications for machine and line-level monitoring, control, and data collection.
  • Create complete control system architectures, including I/O layouts, panel designs, and network topologies, using AutoCAD/EPLAN for electrical schematics.
  • Commission control systems on-site, including startup, troubleshooting, optimization, and handover to plant operations teams.
  • Implement and validate industrial safety solutions, including safety PLCs, interlocks, light curtains, and emergency stop systems in line with applicable standards.
  • Tune PID loops and configure instrumentation (sensors, actuators, transmitters) to achieve stable and responsive process control.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and process engineers, as well as customer stakeholders, to ensure controls solutions meet functional, safety, and performance requirements.

Key Requirements:

  • Strong, hands-on experience in PLC programming and troubleshooting with Allen-Bradley (Rockwell) platforms; exposure to Siemens or other major PLC brands.
  • Proven experience programming, integrating, and commissioning FANUC robots in industrial automation environments.
  • Demonstrated capability in HMI/SCADA development and integration, including screen design, tag management, and data logging.
  • Solid understanding of industrial safety standards and machine safeguarding practices, including OSHA, NFPA 70E, and ISO 13849.
  • Practical experience in process automation and instrumentation, including PID loop tuning and configuration of field devices.
  • Proficiency in control system design and electrical schematics creation using AutoCAD and/or EPLAN.
  • Track record of leading controls engineering activities on complex automation projects, including on-site startup and issue resolution.
  • Ability to work independently in a contract environment, managing priorities, timelines, and customer expectations.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with safety PLCs and safety-rated devices for functional safety implementations.
  • Familiarity with industrial networking and communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus, etc.).
  • Background in integrating MES/ERP or data collection systems with plant-floor controls.
  • Exposure to motion control systems, servo drives, and advanced axis coordination.
  • Previous work with automotive, food & beverage, or other high-volume manufacturing sectors.
  • Experience writing technical documentation, test plans, and functional specifications for controls systems.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls/Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related discipline.
  • Associate degree in an electrical or controls-related field with significant relevant experience may be considered.
  • Professional certifications in industrial automation, controls, or safety (e.g., Rockwell, Siemens, FANUC, or safety-related credentials) preferred.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development in controls engineering, robotics, or industrial safety standards.
