Job Description

Step into a contract role where your Siemens PLC expertise will directly shape the performance, reliability, and safety of complex industrial automation systems. You’ll be working on high-impact projects, configuring, programming, and optimising control systems that keep production running efficiently and safely.

About the Role:

In this role, you will develop and commission PLC and HMI/SCADA solutions using Siemens TIA Portal across a range of industrial applications. You’ll be responsible for ensuring robust hardware configuration, reliable communication between devices, and compliance with relevant safety and functional safety standards. Your work will have a direct impact on system uptime, process efficiency, and the safe operation of automated equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, modify, and optimise PLC programs using Siemens TIA Portal for new and existing automation systems.
  • Design and implement HMI/SCADA screens and logic for operator interfaces, alarms, trends, and system diagnostics.
  • Configure PLC hardware, including I/O modules, communication interfaces, and network topology for industrial environments.
  • Integrate and commission industrial communication protocols (e.g. Profibus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Modbus) between PLCs and field devices.
  • Perform on-site and remote troubleshooting of control systems, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Conduct diagnostics on PLCs, HMIs, and networks to resolve faults and improve system reliability and performance.
  • Implement and validate safety-related functions in accordance with applicable safety and functional safety standards.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation for PLC programs, configurations, and system architecture.

Key Requirements:

  • Strong hands-on experience programming Siemens PLCs using TIA Portal in industrial automation projects.
  • Proven track record in developing HMI/SCADA applications, including screen design, alarm management, and data handling.
  • Solid experience with PLC hardware configuration, I/O mapping, and network setup in multi-device systems.
  • Practical experience working with industrial communication protocols and integrating PLCs with drives, sensors, and other field devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and diagnose complex control system issues under time constraints.
  • Good understanding of machine and process safety concepts and their implementation within control systems.
  • Ability to interpret electrical and control schematics and translate them into functional PLC logic.
  • Comfortable working independently in a contract environment, managing priorities and delivering to project deadlines.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with other Siemens software tools and platforms (e.g. WinCC, Step 7, PCS7).
  • Exposure to multi-vendor environments (e.g. Rockwell, Schneider, Omron) and cross-platform integration.
  • Knowledge of higher-level data integration (MES, ERP, databases) from PLC/SCADA systems.
  • Familiarity with commissioning and FAT/SAT procedures in industrial projects.
  • Experience in documenting functional specifications and test procedures for control systems.

Qualifications:

  • Degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Control/Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
  • Formal training or certification in Siemens TIA Portal and related Siemens automation products (preferred).
  • Additional certification or training in functional safety (e.g. TÜV, CFSE/CFSP) is advantageous.
  • Relevant vocational or technical qualifications in industrial control systems will be considered.

If you are a contract PLC Programmer who thrives on solving complex automation challenges and delivering robust Siemens-based solutions, this role offers an excellent opportunity to apply your skills on impactful projects. Apply now to be considered for upcoming assignments.
