Step into a high-impact commissioning role where youll bring complex automation systems to life on cutting-edge industrial projects. This contract position offers the opportunity to work with leading-edge PLCs, robots, and field instrumentation, delivering robust, reliable control solutions in demanding environments.
About the Role:
You will be responsible for on-site commissioning, testing, and optimisation of Siemens SIMATIC S7-1500 PLC systems, ABB robots with IRC5 controllers, and associated industrial networks. Working closely with project teams and client representatives, you will ensure that all automation and control systems are installed, configured, and validated to specification. Your work will directly influence system performance, safety, and long-term maintainability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Commission Siemens SIMATIC S7-1500 PLCs, including configuration, parameterisation, and functional testing of control programs.
- Configure, test, and optimise ABB robots using IRC5 controllers, including integration with PLCs and field devices.
- Perform I/O checks, loop checks, and field instrumentation verification to ensure correct wiring, calibration, and signal integrity.
- Set up, test, and troubleshoot industrial networks and communication protocols, ensuring reliable connectivity across all automation components.
- Execute commissioning plans, perform system start-up, and carry out functional and performance testing against project specifications.
- Diagnose and resolve control system faults, implementing corrective actions and documenting changes.
- Produce clear technical documentation, including commissioning reports, test records, as-built configurations, and handover documentation.
- Collaborate with project engineers, site managers, and client teams to coordinate commissioning activities and manage technical issues on site.
Key Requirements:
- Proven experience as a PLC Commissioning Engineer in industrial automation environments.
- Strong hands-on experience with Siemens SIMATIC S7-1500 systems, including TIA Portal-based configuration and testing.
- Practical experience commissioning ABB robots with IRC5 controllers, including basic programming and integration.
- Solid understanding of industrial networking and communication protocols (e.g. Profinet, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, Modbus).
- Demonstrated experience with field instrumentation, I/O testing, and loop checking on live sites.
- Ability to interpret and work from P&IDs, electrical drawings, and control system schematics.
- Strong fault-finding skills and a methodical approach to troubleshooting under time constraints.
- Willingness to work on client sites, sometimes in demanding industrial environments and to project-driven deadlines.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience in commissioning within sectors such as manufacturing, process, utilities, or material handling.
- Familiarity with safety PLCs, safety circuits, and functional safety concepts.
- Exposure to SCADA/HMI systems and integration with PLC and robot systems.
- Experience with remote diagnostics tools and industrial cybersecurity best practices.
- Previous involvement in FAT/SAT activities and client acceptance testing.
Qualifications:
- Degree or Higher National qualification in Electrical, Electronic, Control, or Automation Engineering (or equivalent).
- Recognised apprenticeship or formal vocational training in industrial automation or electrical engineering.
- Relevant vendor training or certification in Siemens TIA Portal and/or ABB IRC5 (preferred).
- Valid site safety training or certification appropriate to industrial environments (preferred).
