Job Description

Step into a high-impact contract role where your PLC programming expertise will directly shape complex automotive and material handling automation projects. You’ll be working on cutting-edge Body-in-White (BIW) and conveyor systems, delivering robust, efficient control solutions in fast-paced industrial environments.

About the Role:
This role focuses on the design, programming, testing, and commissioning of PLC-based automation systems using Siemens TIA Portal, with a strong emphasis on BIW and conveyor applications. You will play a key part in integrating HMI/SCADA systems, industrial communication networks, and safety functions to ensure reliable, compliant operations. Your work will be central to successful project delivery, from initial development through on-site commissioning and handover.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, configure, and optimise PLC programs in Siemens TIA Portal for BIW and/or conveyor systems.
  • Design, implement, and integrate HMI/SCADA interfaces to support effective monitoring, control, and diagnostics.
  • Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP) across automation networks.
  • Lead or support on-site commissioning activities, including I/O checks, functional testing, fault finding, and performance optimisation.
  • Implement and validate industrial safety functions in line with relevant standards and customer specifications.
  • Produce clear technical documentation, including functional specifications, test procedures, and system manuals for automation projects.
  • Apply version control practices to manage PLC, HMI/SCADA, and configuration changes throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, process, and IT) to ensure seamless system integration and successful project delivery.

Key Requirements:

  • Strong hands-on experience programming Siemens PLCs using TIA Portal in industrial automation environments.
  • Proven background in commissioning PLC-based systems, ideally within BIW and/or conveyor applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and integrating HMI/SCADA systems for production or material handling processes.
  • Solid understanding and practical use of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Profibus, and Ethernet/IP.
  • Working knowledge of industrial safety standards and compliance requirements (e.g., safety PLCs, interlocks, emergency stops).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Proficient in documenting automation solutions and managing changes using structured version control methods.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex control and communication issues under time constraints.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in automotive manufacturing environments, particularly Body-in-White production lines.
  • Familiarity with conveyor control strategies, accumulation logic, and integration with upstream/downstream equipment.
  • Exposure to additional PLC platforms and engineering tools beyond Siemens TIA Portal.
  • Experience with industrial IT/OT integration, including data collection, MES interfaces, or OPC-based connectivity.
  • Background in functional safety design and validation, including risk assessments and safety function testing.
  • Ability to support remote troubleshooting and optimisation of installed systems.

Qualifications:

  • Degree or Higher National Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Control Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Formal training or certification in Siemens TIA Portal programming (or equivalent vendor-recognised courses) preferred.
  • Additional certifications in industrial automation, functional safety, or industrial networking are advantageous.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development in PLC programming and industrial control technologies.

If you are a contract PLC Programmer who thrives in complex commissioning environments and wants to make a direct impact on high-profile automation projects, we’d like to hear from you.
