About the Role:
You will be responsible for the construction, wiring, and installation of industrial control panels in accordance with UL 508A and relevant NFPA standards. Working on a variety of customer projects, youll ensure panels are built, installed, and commissioned correctly, including PLCs, motor controls, and VFDs, to meet strict performance and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build and wire industrial control panels according to UL 508A standards, project drawings, and schematics.
- Lay out components within panels to optimize space, serviceability, and heat management while maintaining code compliance.
- Install PLC hardware, I/O modules, and related control devices in panels and on-site as required.
- Troubleshoot PLC-related issues at the hardware level and assist with basic diagnostics during commissioning.
- Wire and test motor control circuits, including starters, contactors, overloads, and related protection devices.
- Configure and set up variable frequency drives (VFDs) for proper motor operation and integration into control systems.
- Perform on-site panel installation, termination, and checkout, ensuring alignment with NFPA 70 (NEC) and NFPA 79 requirements.
- Conduct functional testing, verify proper operation of control circuits, and document any issues or corrective actions.
Key Requirements:
- Proven experience as an industrial control panel electrician or control panel builder in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Strong hands-on skills in industrial control panel wiring, layout, and component mounting.
- Practical understanding of UL 508A requirements for panel construction and labeling.
- Working knowledge of NFPA 70 (NEC) and NFPA 79 as they apply to industrial machinery and control panels.
- Experience with motor control circuits, including troubleshooting and repair of control wiring and devices.
- Ability to install and troubleshoot PLC hardware and associated control wiring.
- Competence in setting up and verifying VFD parameters for proper motor and system performance.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings accurately.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience working with multiple PLC and VFD brands commonly used in industrial applications.
- Familiarity with industrial networking and communication wiring (e.g., Ethernet, fieldbus, I/O networks).
- Prior involvement in panel shop environments with documented quality and inspection processes.
- Experience supporting field startups, commissioning, and customer acceptance testing.
- Understanding of basic control logic concepts to aid in troubleshooting functional issues.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of an electrical apprenticeship program or equivalent formal training preferred.
- Journeyman or Master Electrician license in Michigan is advantageous but not always mandatory for panel work.
- Relevant technical certifications related to industrial controls, UL 508A, or NFPA compliance are a plus.
