Step into a high-impact controls engineering role where you’ll own the automation backbone of complex manufacturing systems. You’ll work with leading-edge robotics, PLCs, and industrial networks to deliver robust, efficient solutions that keep production running smoothly and safely.

About the Role:
In this contract position, you will design, program, and commission control systems for automated equipment and palletizing cells, with a strong focus on Fanuc robotics and industrial PLC platforms. You will translate functional requirements into detailed controls architectures, documentation, and HMI interfaces that are reliable, maintainable, and compliant with customer and industry standards. Your work will directly support successful project delivery from concept through startup on-site in Michigan.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program, configure, and integrate Fanuc robots, including Fanuc 2D vision systems, for material handling, palletizing, and other automated applications.
  • Develop, modify, and debug PLC logic (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.) for new and existing automation systems, including safety and interlock routines.
  • Design and implement HMI screens and control interfaces for operators, focusing on usability, diagnostics, and clear process visualization.
  • Engineer, tune, and commission servo systems and VFDs for motion control, speed regulation, and coordinated machine operations.
  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD/Electrical CAD to support fabrication and field installation.
  • Configure and troubleshoot industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP) to ensure reliable communication between PLCs, robots, drives, and peripheral devices.
  • Support onsite installation, startup, and commissioning activities, including I/O checkout, system testing, and production handover.
  • Diagnose and resolve controls-related issues during FAT, SAT, and early production runs, providing clear technical documentation and updates to stakeholders.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Controls Engineer working with Fanuc robots in industrial automation environments.
  • Hands-on PLC programming experience with at least one major platform (Allen-Bradley or Siemens), including commissioning and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated ability to configure and integrate Fanuc 2D vision systems for part detection, guidance, and quality checks.
  • Practical experience with servo systems and VFDs, including parameter setup, tuning, and fault diagnostics.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or Electrical CAD tools for developing and revising controls documentation and electrical drawings.
  • Strong background in industrial networking (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP) including addressing, configuration, and network diagnostics.
  • Ability to work independently on-site, managing priorities and collaborating effectively with mechanical, process, and project teams.
  • Solid understanding of industrial safety standards and best practices related to machine control and robotics.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with palletizing system design, layout optimization, and integration with upstream/downstream equipment.
  • Familiarity with additional HMI/SCADA platforms beyond standard OEM tools.
  • Exposure to multiple PLC platforms and legacy system migration or upgrades.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis and implementing long-term corrective actions for recurring controls issues.
  • Knowledge of industrial cybersecurity practices for control networks.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Relevant certifications or formal training in Fanuc robotics programming and/or Fanuc vision systems preferred.
  • Training or certification in Allen-Bradley or Siemens PLC platforms is an advantage.
  • OSHA or equivalent safety training related to industrial automation and robotics is beneficial.
