Job Description

Step into a hands-on role where your mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills directly influence the delivery of custom machinery to manufacturing clients across Michigan. This is a contract opportunity with a company that relies on precise, reliable machine builders to turn engineered concepts into fully functioning equipment on tight timelines.

About the Role:
As a Machine Builder, you will assemble, fit, and install mechanical components and subassemblies to build custom machines from engineering drawings and specifications. You will ensure each machine meets performance, safety, and quality standards before release to clients, working closely with engineers, project managers, and customer representatives. Your work will support on-time project completion and the smooth commissioning of equipment at client sites.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assemble mechanical components, subassemblies, and complete machines according to engineering drawings, schematics, and work instructions
  • Fit, align, and adjust parts using hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments, and appropriate fabrication techniques
  • Install and integrate mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and basic electrical components as specified in build documentation
  • Perform functional testing, troubleshooting, and adjustments to ensure machines operate to required specifications and safety standards
  • Interpret and follow written, oral, diagrammatic, and schedule-based instructions to meet project milestones and delivery dates
  • Document build activities, modifications, and test results in clear reports and build logs for internal and customer use
  • Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and clients to clarify requirements, resolve build issues, and support machine start-up
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and adhere to company safety policies and regulatory requirements throughout the build process

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience in machine building, mechanical assembly, or industrial equipment construction in a manufacturing or automation environment
  • Strong ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, engineering documentation, and applicable regulations
  • Ability to write clear reports, build documentation, business correspondence, and procedure manuals as required by projects
  • Confident in presenting build status, technical information, and test results to managers, clients, and other stakeholders
  • Solid understanding of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry for layout, alignment, and precision assembly tasks
  • Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to measurements, tolerances, and material usage
  • Demonstrated capability to solve practical problems and work with a variety of concrete variables where limited standardization exists
  • Comfortable working to schedules and adapting to changing priorities in a project-based, contract environment

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience building custom automation equipment, special machines, or tooling for industrial applications
  • Familiarity with probability and basic statistical concepts for evaluating test data and machine performance
  • Exposure to pneumatic and hydraulic systems, including component installation and basic troubleshooting
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and assist with simple wiring or controls integration
  • Previous customer-facing experience supporting machine installation, commissioning, or field service

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Technical certificate or diploma in Mechanical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, or a related field preferred
  • Apprenticeship or formal training in machine building, mechanical assembly, or industrial mechanics is an advantage
  • Relevant safety training and certifications (e.g., OSHA, lockout/tagout) preferred

If you are a detail-focused machine builder who enjoys complex, custom projects and can start quickly on a contract basis, please apply to be considered for upcoming assignments in Michigan.
