Job Description

Join a high-performing engineering team delivering complex automated machinery for blue-chip manufacturing clients. This contract role offers the chance to take full ownership of mechanical designs from concept to release, working on challenging, bespoke systems that push your CAD and problem-solving skills. You’ll be part of a collaborative environment where your technical decisions directly influence project success and customer outcomes.

About the Role:
You will be responsible for the end-to-end mechanical design of automated assembly systems, custom machinery, and industrial automation equipment. Working closely with controls, electrical, and manufacturing engineers, you will transform requirements into robust, manufacturable designs. Your work will ensure systems meet performance, safety, and reliability targets while adhering to project timelines and standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop complete 3D mechanical designs for automated equipment using Creo or SolidWorks, from concept layouts through detailed models.
  • Produce clear, accurate engineering drawings and documentation in accordance with GD&T and company standards.
  • Select mechanical, pneumatic, and motion control components to meet performance, cost, and reliability requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate mechanical designs with electrical, controls, and software systems.
  • Conduct design reviews, tolerance analyses, and design-for-manufacturability assessments to ensure robust solutions.
  • Support root cause analysis and implement design changes to resolve mechanical issues identified during build, test, or commissioning.
  • Manage design data and revisions using Windchill PDM/PLM, ensuring traceability and configuration control.
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing and assembly teams during build, test, and installation phases.

Key Requirements:

  • 3+ years of mechanical design experience in automated assembly systems, custom machinery, industrial automation, robotics, or special-purpose equipment.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD, ideally Creo; strong SolidWorks experience will also be considered.
  • Hands-on experience designing pneumatic and mechanical systems, including actuators, cylinders, and motion components.
  • Strong understanding of motion control components and integration into automated machinery.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently execute complete machine designs with minimal supervision.
  • Proven experience applying GD&T and engineering drawing standards to produce manufacturing-ready documentation.
  • Experience using Windchill or similar PDM/PLM systems for design data management.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment, communicating clearly with stakeholders.
  • Strong mechanical problem-solving skills, including structured root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
  • Solid knowledge of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability principles.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with automated assembly equipment for high-volume production environments.
  • Familiarity with safety standards related to industrial machinery and automation.
  • Exposure to robotics integration within automated systems.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, testing, and field issue resolution.
  • Background in continuous improvement or design optimization for cost, reliability, or performance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience will be considered.
  • Professional engineering registration or progress toward licensure is an advantage.
  • Additional certifications in CAD (Creo or SolidWorks) or PDM/PLM systems are beneficial.

If you are a mechanically focused problem-solver who enjoys owning complex machine designs from concept to completion, this contract role offers an excellent opportunity to make a visible impact—apply now to be considered.
