Job Description

Step into a high-impact engineering role where your mechanical design expertise directly shapes complex, custom automated assembly equipment. You’ll join a technically strong team that values precision, creativity, and practical problem-solving, working on challenging projects that demand both rigor and innovation.

About the Role:
As a Contract Design Engineer, you will be responsible for creating robust mechanical designs for custom automated assembly systems using SolidWorks and Windchill. You’ll take ownership of assigned equipment designs from concept through detailed component development, ensuring they meet stringent technical, safety, and manufacturability requirements. This role focuses on deep technical contribution and design excellence, without project management or leadership duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform complex mechanical design of custom automated assembly equipment using SolidWorks and Windchill.
  • Own the design of assigned equipment from initial layout and concept through detailed component and assembly development.
  • Independently evaluate, select, and apply standard and advanced engineering principles to address design challenges.
  • Adapt or modify established design methods and approaches for non-routine or complex assignments.
  • Participate in formal design reviews with Project Engineers, presenting design intent and responding constructively to feedback.
  • Ensure designs meet requirements for accuracy, manufacturability, safety, and performance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, controls, and systems teams to support integration and resolve interface issues.
  • Prepare and maintain complete design documentation, including models, drawings, and BOMs, in accordance with company standards.

Key Requirements:

  • Proven experience as a Mechanical or Design Engineer working on automated assembly equipment or similar complex machinery.
  • Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling, assemblies, and detailed mechanical drawings.
  • Hands-on experience using Windchill or a comparable PLM system for managing CAD data and revisions.
  • Strong ability to apply engineering principles to solve complex mechanical design problems independently.
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering accurate, manufacturable designs within defined project requirements.
  • Familiarity with designing for safety, reliability, and maintainability in industrial or automation environments.
  • Comfortable participating in formal design reviews and incorporating structured feedback into designs.
  • Effective collaboration skills for working with cross-functional engineering teams.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience designing custom automation, robotics, or material handling systems.
  • Knowledge of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis for precision assemblies.
  • Exposure to pneumatic, servo, or motion control components in automated equipment.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes such as machining, fabrication, and assembly.
  • Prior experience in a contract or consulting engineering environment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus but not required.
  • Relevant certifications or formal training in SolidWorks or PLM systems are advantageous.

If you’re a technically driven Design Engineer who thrives on complex mechanical challenges and wants to focus on high-quality design work, this contract role offers an ideal opportunity to make an immediate impact. Apply now to contribute your expertise to cutting-edge automated assembly projects.
