Job Description: Senior Allen-Bradley PLC Controls Engineer (20-Week Contract)

Position: Senior PLC Controls Engineer
Duration: 20 weeks (Contract)
Industry: Automation / Industrial Controls
Location: On-site/Hybrid/Remote (specify as needed) -Ohio

Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Allen-Bradley PLC Controls Engineer to support initial system design, controls architecture, and PLC code development for a major automation project. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise with Rockwell Automation platforms and a proven track record of delivering high-quality controls solutions in fast-paced industrial environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of control systems using Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation) hardware and software.
  • Develop PLC logic primarily in Studio 5000 / RSLogix 5000, including program structure, routines, AOIs, UDTs, and safety functions.
  • Create system architecture documents, I/O lists, functional specifications, and network layouts.
  • Support the development of HMI/SCADA applications (FactoryTalk View SE/ME).
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and process engineering teams to ensure seamless system integration.
  • Perform debugging, simulation, and validation of PLC programs before deployment.
  • Support FAT/SAT, commissioning, and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards (IEC, NFPA, OSHA, etc.).
  • Provide technical guidance, best practices, and mentorship to project team members.

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years experience in automation and controls engineering.
  • Expert-level proficiency with Allen-Bradley PLCs, including ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and related Rockwell Automation platforms.
  • Strong experience with Studio 5000, FactoryTalk View, and industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, ControlNet, CIP).
  • Ability to develop clean, modular, well-documented PLC code from scratch.
  • Strong electrical and control system design knowledge (schematics, panel layouts, instrumentation, safety circuits).
  • Experience supporting commissioning and troubleshooting in the field.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with motion control, VFDs, or robotics.
  • Familiarity with P&IDs, control narratives, and functional design specs.
  • Experience in management of programming teams, advantageous
  • Knowledge of safety PLCs and safety system design (GuardLogix).
