Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Job Summary

The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for developing and reviewing engineering designs, ensuring that custom equipment and tooling meet performance, budget, and schedule requirements. This role involves working closely with engineering leadership and collaborating with cross-functional teams throughout the project lifecycle.


Key Responsibilities

  • Create, revise, and verify mechanical designs and drawings for functionality and cost-effectiveness

  • Support Engineering Manager or Lead Engineer with high-level assignments

  • Attend and contribute to internal, vendor, and customer design reviews

  • Provide engineering support to suppliers and shop floor teams during build and assembly phases

  • Update drawings to reflect changes, As-Built conditions, and non-conformances

  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including drawings and component details

  • Lead or assist in conducting FMEA and ergonomic reviews at key design phases

  • Ensure adherence to safety, environmental, and quality standards

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives

  • Maintain regular, reliable attendance as part of core job expectations


Qualifications & Experience

  • Associate degree or equivalent technical training required

  • 5–10 years of relevant mechanical design experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

  • Proficiency with Siemens NX (minimum 4 years required)

  • Experience in powertrain assembly or test equipment design

  • Familiarity with facility layouts and transport systems (a plus)

  • Experience designing transport pallets (a plus)

  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, materials, and manufacturing methods


Skills & Abilities

  • Strong ability to interpret technical documents, schematics, and engineering standards

  • Effective written and verbal communication with teams, vendors, and clients

  • Capable of advanced math, including geometry, trigonometry, and statistical analysis

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work with minimal standardization

  • Comfortable working with both abstract concepts and practical implementations


Additional Information

  • Based primarily at the Fenton location (~90% of time)

  • Occasional local travel required

  • Willingness to work overtime as needed based on project demands

  • Must be physically capable of typical engineering shop and office activities (lifting up to 25 lbs, moderate noise, occasional exposure to mechanical equipment)
